    Portland GEARS Show

*sigh* Was sad to have missed this event since it was so close to me. Never even heard of the GEARS group until I read about them here. But now I know. So I will see you next year for sure.

    It's Just a Nick

I'd slap your hand for being so careless... But it appears the bolt already did that.

    Sometimes You Need a Truck

Back when Dodge Dakota/Durango looked cool. Here is my old 1999 Durango. I loved that truck, but traded it in on a new one after the Dodge (5-star) dealership forgot to put back in the air filter after a tune up. Drove around for 2 months before the engine started to die. She had high torque...

    Aluminum for steam engine?

Many thanks gentlemen. That is some great information. Gives me a lot to ponder. It was curious that Tin Falcon mentioned the PM Research engine. I said to myself, 'Hey, I have one of those!' (I adore garage sale finds.) I nabbed that off the shelf and took it apart. Cast Aluminum Cylinder with...

    Aluminum for steam engine?

More good info. I was familiar with the 'effect' of Galling, but honestly never knew there was a term for it. (Have since read all about it, thank you.) So anodizing isn't going to help much. I guess if I am to use any Aluminum, I will have to but brass bearings and sleeves on any moving parts...

    Aluminum for steam engine?

@Ken I Awesome. You have no idea how valuable your input is here. I was very close to making a fatal mistake. :) I didn't know about the corrosion issue either. Would it make any difference to the whole concept if I anodized the aluminum? @Jasonb Yes, the intent was to make every bit of it...

    Aluminum for steam engine?

@albertorc19 - Thanks for the links. I still have Metal casting on my list of skills to add metal working resume. That is some pretty cool stuff. @Neil K - That's more along the lines of the information I was after! I have made widgets of various kinds over the years that had similar...

    Aluminum for steam engine?

Curiosity question here regarding crafting a Steam engine entirely from Aluminum. My question is mostly based on two factors. I have prolific amounts of Aluminum in my shop ...but... I have not seen very many (if any) little steam engines made from Aluminum. Is there some prevailing issue with...

So who is this 'WiKKiD' guy anyway...

Aye. I was on a 'Chopper' trip for a while in my 3D meanderings. There was some pretty neat creations in that foray. But the Steamer was my fav. I actually have an animated version of it. The drive train is a 'tweaked' version of the Walschaerts valve gear found on old Steam locomotives. In...

So who is this 'WiKKiD' guy anyway...

Glad you asked.... I've been lurking around these forums for ages being amazed by the creations you guys (and gals?) come up with. I've recently decided to make my own steam engine so I figured it was time to become part of the family here. To properly introduce myself... I do a great deal...
