    Making my first D-bit

I've successfully made a few of these and would love to see how you set up to accomplish the task. I learn a lot from seeing how others accomplish the same thing as I have with a whole different set-up... Hoping it leads to one of those "why didn't I think of that" moments!

    D-drill bit??

KQ, I checked out that link....WOW! That's an incredible amount of information packed into one place. My fiance already knows what that page looks like and I just got a great eye-roll 15 minutes ago! She will be happier once I finish fabricating our wedding bands and I can get to a little engine...

    D-drill bit??

I've made quite a few of these as well using O1 tool steel. I cut the desired profile on the lathe, polish it then set it up in my mill on a parallel. I then machine away 0.001 to 0.002 less than half the thickness with a carbide end mill. After that's done I harden it then throw it in a...

    Obstacles when learning CAD

Chris, I have much less experience than the others who have weighed in, but have considerable experience in rolling out "technology upgrades" at three different workplaces. I started as self-taught on AutoCAD 12 in 10th grade as my drafting teacher didn't even know how to install the program...

    Cast Iron Grades

Thanks for the good info guys. I may order some grey as well, I don't mint the material stock growing a bit more. It's easy to hide another 12" piece from the fiance :) Paul, it looks like one of the Alro locations is about 4 miles from work. I'll stop by and take a look at them.

    Cast Iron Grades

I've already purchased some cast iron material to make a small C.I. piston from but the different cast iron options available got me thinking... I have plenty of experience with the varying grades of aluminum and steel, but have not had any experience with cast iron at work. The supplier I...

    Boring on the "back side"

Thanks Guys, I certainly know its not an original idea... I've read about it being done, but wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking anything on setup before trying it myself.

    Boring on the "back side"

I think I have this thought through on my own, but always welcome others to fill in any assumptions I've made before they bite me in the hand. I just got a set of boring bars that I'm quite happy with. I can hold the 5/16" and 3/8" bars in one of my QCTP holders, but not the 1/2" bar. I have a...

    Spraybar Tips & Tricks

I'm finishing the design work on my first IC engine and had a few questions about machining the spraybar. I'm sitting here looking at this piece with some relatively deep for diameter holes and a REALLY small cross bore on a round surface. Any tips or guidance on setting up and machining these...

    Small diesel engine?

I'd do a search for "Boll Aero 18" on here and the internet. Below is a link to another forum post on this engine. http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/f31/boll-aero-18-a-7108/

New CI Design in Princeton, NJ

Thanks Stan, The intention here isn't just to build an engine. My intention is to work from start to finish through the entire design, fabrication, testing, redesign cycle. My goal isn't just to build an engine and run it, it's the design part that I hold the most interest in. It's quite an...

    Design RPM, 0.090ci comp ignition

I really have no intention of flying this one, but it might happen. This is more a technical exercise in design and fabrication. I need another hobby like I need another hole in my head! I've seen some small diesels run, but have never done it myself. I could have started out by building an...

    Crankshaft needle bearings

Thanks Guys, I'll shelve the needle bearing idea for now. I mocked up a crankshaft out of O1 this morning and tried to harden it... The warping wasn't too bad, but was more than I want to try to grind true again. I'll stick with the plain bearing for now.

    Crankshaft needle bearings

If I go with the needle set-up I'm sticking with a rather oversize crankshaft. For the same bearing od I can go with a larger I'd. With the needles running on the shaft do of think I'll have an issue with 1144 or should I make it from O1, harden and grind to size after hardening? -Kyle

    Design RPM, 0.090ci comp ignition

Thanks Greg, I may bump the calculations to 9.5k and see where that leads. I've got some freedom with the exhaust and intake, but trying to keep the transfer to 0.00095 sec-cc/cm3 is proving to be a challenge. My thought was to design for 9k, get it broken in then play with prop size to get...
