Indian milling machines (and machine tools in general) - A possible alternative?

Beware! I clicked on the 'pictures' link on the first post and a pop-up came up demanding money and there was a countdown type ticking sound. I switched off straight away so didn't get all the details. Fortunately all ok on a restart. John S

    handy little gadget.

I'd like to put a vote in for the 'handy little gadget' Although I use the split nut method, sometimes the only available nut is smaller or the same size as the screw head, then the thread is not held tightly in the chuck. Thanks for the idea

    Tap nomenclature: US vs UK

In my(UK) book on Metalwork Technology by G.H. Thomas, he uses the terms 'Taper tap, Second tap or Intermediate tap and Bottoming tap or Plug tap' to describe the three types of tap just as you say. Personally I have always known them as taper, second and plug. Hope that helps.

    Found some goddies

I mostly use DTIs for alignment rather than measurement so the scale doesn't really matter. Two nice examples - enjoy!

need help with recycling a motor.

I can recommend the following book: Electrical Motors in the Home Workshop by Jim Cox ISBN 978 185486 133 7 It covers using and recycling of all sorts of motors including the type that you have. Only costs about £7.00 in the UK Regards

    Carbide tips

Herbiev Just to clarify the types of solder to avoid confusion over soft and hard solders: 1. Soft solder, this is the stuff used in electronics and in plumbing. Different compositions are available and can be melted with a soldering iron but in plumbing and some model engineering work a torch...

Brian Take a look at the following free download from UK Health & Safety Executive. I think it will tell you all you need to know and illustrate things like the correct use of paper washers (blotters), mounting and how to do a ring test etc...

    Sieg X2 motor-problem.. SOLVED

I had a similar problem with my X2 and it was the potentiometer. When I replaced it I took the opportunity to fit a separate switch. Now I can switch off quickly and return to the preset speed when I switch back on. Regards

    Thickness gauge

I got one of ebay too and the anvils are not parallel on mine as well. Because of this it is not that repeatable but with a bit of re-engineering it should improve. Can't grumble at the price (£5.50) and only want it for a quick check of bar stock and drills etc. If any one is expecting to...

    Cleaning small taped holes

I have some small brushes (like miniature bottle brushes) for cleaning between teeth. They are available in various sizes from the chemist (drug store). I suspect they would be useful for this, and come to think of it, many other uses in engineering.

    Harold Hall's precision grinding table

Bob I made the simpler version of Harold Halls grinding table and the drill sharpening attachment. They both work well but maybe worth pointing out that the drill jig sharpens them to the four facet configuration. This is good for many drilling operations but not all and I found I could not use...
