    Chinese 7x Lathe Safety Issue

My mini lathe will often start up again after I turn it "off" with the speed control. Early on I developed the habit of always hitting the "E-STOP" every single time after turning it "off".

    Lathe strobe

Ok, I'll chime in here. Get a few of those real bright white LED's. Fasten a magnet to the lathe chuck, or somewhere else out of the way. Use a reed switch or hall effect sensor to turn the LED array on when it "sees" the magnet. This will give you a pulse of bright light on every revolution...

    Lathe strobe

    Yes, I was exaggerating obviously.

    Lathe strobe

This would be a fun problem to solve, but I really don't see why he wants it. Yeah, it would be pretty cool, but to serve what purpose? Sounds like an invitation for an accident to me. I for one would rather NOT be fooled into thinking a largish chunk of (something potentially harmful) was...

Drill a very long 1/16" hole without breaking bit?

Good idea. I was using a small acid brush to clear away the cuttings, but had to stop the bit occasionally to manually remove stubborn chips from the flutes. I was amazed at the end of the process, the end of the bit still looked almost new.

Drill a very long 1/16" hole without breaking bit?

Brand new long bit, lots of Tap Magic, full speed on the mini-mill, and dozens of short pecks did the trick. I made the hole last night with no problems. It took a while, but worked like a champ. Thanks everyone for all the good advice. I got that passageway drilled then did the rest of the...

Drill a very long 1/16" hole without breaking bit?

This particular "rather long" hole is in the neighborhood of 1 1/2".

Drill a very long 1/16" hole without breaking bit?

It looks like the common theme here is "peck drilling". Actually I have done what amounts to peck drilling, but my "pecks" are more like "lunges", that's what breaks the bit I suppose. I need lo lighten up and take smaller bites. Also, hadn't thought about starting with a brand new bit...

Drill a very long 1/16" hole without breaking bit?

I'm yet another noobie, starting on Elmer's #19 Standby. I have the frame (aluminum) milled to shape and all the holes layed out. If you are familiar with this little engine, you will recall that it gets a rather long 1/16" hole drilled down the length of the frame into the shaft area for the...

    Hi ho from Southern Illinois

Thanks for posting those pics. I followed the link, and I think I have a copy of the plans that he based his engine on, or at least one very similar, as a few years ago I build my own version of an engine that uses the same valve arraignment. I used a piece of copper water pipe for the...

    Hi ho from Southern Illinois

Thanks all for the nice welcomes. I hadn't seen the HasBrouck site, thanks for the link. The #3 looks like something I would like to build. If I decide to try it I know where to come for advice. I never attended SIU, but have been on campus many times and know Carbondale well. I live just...

    Hi ho from Southern Illinois

I have been lurking on here for some time, thought I would say hello. I have the ever famous (or infamous) Grizzly mini lathe and similarly sized mini mill from MicroMark along with misc tooling for each. No rotary table yet though, as we have recently moved and have had to tighten the old...
