Electronic Dividing Head using the Arduino

Once again Chuck, thank you! I have had a change of mind. I was going to make a dividing head like yours, but for simplicity, I have decided to convert my Tom Senior dividing head - 40:1 ratio. I had a good look at it yesterday and it's very easy to convert. In fact, I have done most of...

Electronic Dividing Head using the Arduino

Thanks Chuck! Your help is appreciated, as are the comments from other members... :) One more question - or maybe a few... I want to be able to cut gears up to 127 teeth - Boxford Imperial to Metric screw cutting conversion... Can you, or anyone, suggest how many steps I...

Electronic Dividing Head using the Arduino

Once again thanks for the response guys. I'm sorry, but the code in your message RodW is meaningless to me at this time. Chuck, I can more or less follow your code - I don't yet understand it, but I'll use it for now. It's important to me to be able to have an idea of what the code...

Electronic Dividing Head using the Arduino

Thanks guys, I guess I have some experimentation ahead of me - and a steep learning curve! The trouble is that this sort of coding is all gobbledegook to me. I can code CSS and html, so I should be able to get my head round this, but none of it makes sense at the moment. When I have the...

Electronic Dividing Head using the Arduino

Hi all, I have just recently come across this thread and am keen to make myself a setup, based on Chuck's great work. I have the Arduino, LCD shield, and driver module on order... Somewhere, I have some stepper motors, but I have no idea where they are at the moment, but I'll dig them...

    Not a model engine, BUT!!!

And here's me deciding if I can fit a 12' x 8' workshop into my garden - how the other half live :)

    Clear Acrylic Help Please.

You could try a sign maker, they use a lot of perspex (acrylic sheet), including clear and the better ones can laser cut it for you to whatever size you want. Laser cutting leaves a very clean edge.....

Acrylic? sheet supplier and moulding? bends

Polycarbonate is incredibly tough, but scratches very easily, whereas Acrylic tends to be brittle, but does not scratch as easily.... When I was working, we made leisure boat instruments with polycarbonate lenses that were hard coated to give them scratch resistance - the best of both worlds...

    Optimum operating speed?

Gentlemen, I need some more advice.... I have a design more or less finished for a two cylinder double acting oscillating engine that ultimately I want to use to drive a 7/8" / 1' scale 'coffee pot' locomotive. My question is, what sort of rpm is optimum for these engines? I don't know...

All aluminium slow rpm air engine?

What if the piston used an O ring, or two - then surely the rubbing surfaces would not be an issue....

    Newbie question on oscillating engine

Tin, Once again thanks for your input. I have made the decision to make the bulk of the engine out of cast iron. This decision has been made quite simply because I have a free source of more than sufficient cast iron to make several engines! Is there any reason why I should not make the...

    Newbie question on oscillating engine

I hear you too Tin and I understand (and agree) with what you say about the materials. It's just that I would really like to use something different, if only I could decide what..... :-\ With reality kicking in, I am leaning towards bronze and / or cast iron. Question time: Is there any...

    Newbie question on oscillating engine

Don't worry, I understood that you were giving me a possible alternative, not a recommendation. I appreciate your time in responding to my questions..... :) I'm still trying to work out the best materials to use - I don't want to use brass or aluminium as these are commonly used materials and I...

    Newbie question on oscillating engine

Thanks to all of your replies, it really is a great help! Gail, you are absolutely correct, I didn't register that PTFE is 10-5, I just read the numbers off.... :-[ Deanofid, I like the idea of a graphite piston as it seems that I can't use PTFE, I'll look into that.... Tin, I originally...

    Newbie question on oscillating engine

Hi Arnold, Thanks for the reply! I appreciate the fact that PTFE won't be that strong on a threaded section, so my idea is to make it as a short piston with metal either side of smaller diameter - a stepped piston rod, with a washer on the crank side and a threaded cap on the other side...

    Newbie question on oscillating engine

Hi, An old, but newbie here - first post - from the south east of England. I have only just found the forum and have searched through it and read lots - It looks a great place to learn! I want to build a twin cylinder, double acting, oscillating steam engine ultimately to fit into a 1:13.7...
