lathes and cold weather with a power upgrade.

I am far from expert on this kind of stuff, but those "steps" at 5-8 oclock look like incremental stress failures to me... the upgrafe just finishing it off

    Dependant On Technology

I think we are all utterly dependent on technology, even us old guys. The tech we rely on was "high tech, "needs a slide rule, cant he do it in his head?" to the old boys when we were young... & goes back to "look at him using a pointed stick, why cant he just use a club like everyone else?" ;)

Lathe Chuck.... think it may be dead

given that teh chuck (and lathe) are older than I am..... >:( shame really as there is no visible wear to the jaw faces.... my guess is by the time I am equipped to grind it it would be cheaper to replace

Lathe Chuck.... think it may be dead

with ground rod in chuck, aprox 1-1.5" jaw 1 tight along length jaw 2: 0.15mm, 20mm in, 0.3 at tip jaw 3: 0.15mm, 15mm in grinding not really an option... no toolpost grinder. mess with it or replace it?

Lathe Chuck.... think it may be dead

Lathe Chuck.... think it may be dead

Decided it was time to investigate a few niggles I have been having... generally the front 1/2" of the chuck jaw on the 3 jaw is not touching the work.... this is a problem i think? ;) doubly so given the gap is diferent at each jaw. solution? chuck is old.. pratt on L0 taper. jaws & body...

    Collet chuck not running true

cost & flexibility Tin... 5c... one size fits one size & relatively ££££ ER one size fits a small range, readily available & fairly cheap, also only need one collet set for mill (when it happens) Appreciate that it is potentially "less accurate" but you have to live within your limitations...

hard to believe it is ten years, sometimes it seems like only yesterday.

    Dial caliper trivia

which is a bit unfair... they are only meant to be for a limited accuracy, and therefore limited application... end of the day even a high end micrometer is only "very near" if working in angstrom units. If a part needs to be +-1/16 even a "cheap" mic is a bit overkill ;).

    Small Point Re Parting Off

try a right hand parting tool, leaves teh back of the parted piece "good" & no clean up, might need to face the blank again tho.

    castiron brazing

the composition & structure of the metal changes quite a bit in the HAZ, you may be able to bring it back aif you can heat & cool very slowly, but probably less work to either remake or take more time machining

    100 watt bulbs banned

energy conservation needs no other argument than we have finite resources & need to make the best possible use of them we can. This does not lead to an either/or situation, it leads to what is the most efficient system we can devise, that system looking at total cost of ownership, from inception...
