A new ball/sphere cutter design - no mill required

Recess the screw into a dovetail slot and add a brass gibb and you have one of these: http://lepton.com/metal/ball_turner.html

How to store your mill tools

I found that a little 20 gauge sheet metal, plasma cutter, brake, and a spot welder make tool storage pretty simple. :big:

    Bridgeport m head question

    :idea: Your grammer gave your identity away! Having an "extra" M-head stored in the other shop doesn't make me an expert on anything but how to take one off. Rof}

    Bridgeport m head question

I'm sure you have already been to Tony's site and looked around but if not, http://www.lathes.co.uk/bridgeport/ HEre's a photo of an adapter I made to mount a J-head onto the M-head round ram. The OD of the back of a J-head is 7.5" and requires a radial (circular) T-slot for the t-bolts that is...

    Bridgeport m head question

The newer dovetailed ram bridgeports have a pad on the back of the ram which is the proper size for mounting an M-head flange. Does your V ram have this feature? If it does, and it matches what you have in the front, you're in! Unfortunately I cannot directly answer your question because I have...

    Humour

A slightly different version of that "The little sparrow" was written on a very big sign over the receiving desk at the movement center, USMC base Camp Pendleton when I went through there in 1977. Nothing course or dirty, but it really drove the point home.

Dissolving a Broken Tap in Aluminum or Brass

I waited a bit to see if my friend would post about trying the alum but I guess not. He went to the local grocery store and picked up a box of alum in the spice aisle, mixed it it water to saturation and immersed the aluminum part with the broken off 6-32 tap in it. Next day, nothing had...

    True Grit

Maybe this site will help" http://www.engineersedge.com/surface_finish.htm In metalwork the best we can do is to continue to even out the hills and valleys. I think Rake posted a photo in another thread of a surface roughness gage of the visual kind for reference. Metal polishing begins where...

Dissolving a Broken Tap in Aluminum or Brass

Thanks for the tips guys! I just sent a link to a friend of mine with a freshly broken 6-32 tap in a chunk of aluminum. I have never tried the chemical route before. Last time I took a tap out of alminum I did it with an arc welder. I wrapped tape around the sides of the rod and stuck it down...

    True Grit

A quick Google search on polishing with toothpaste netted this: I was with him up until: I know several metal polishers that swear by the old Pearl Drops toothpaste. Says they don't sell it anymore and what a shame it is because he could do wonders with it. :toilet:

    True Grit

Hey Zee! I just re-read your post and I think I confused it with a post I read somewhere else where a fellow was wanting to lap surfaces on a mill column. Sorry about that, I shouldn't have made that assumption. Metal surfaces are truly planes of peaks and valleys. Surface grinding or sanding...

    True Grit

Zee, I am curious as to why you would choose to lap vs. scrape. I have read about the lapping methods and the outcomes usually resulted with grit embedded in the iron. If you are just trying to smooth out mating surfaces and want to try it out, pick up some Clover brand lapping compound to play...

stamped sheet steel / any way to duplicate with mill/lathe?

Back when I was in the can business we used to make some spring steel cam plates in stacks with a thick plate on each side of the stack and welds across all 4 corners. The stack was then sent to the wire EDM and all were cut at once. Seems like a long time ago now. A stack of 20 gage will be...

stamped sheet steel / any way to duplicate with mill/lathe?

You did't say anything about tolerances (angular and diametral), burrs, or finish. More importantly, you don't give sizes for any of the holes. That makes your quest rather difficult to process. I would rough the discs to size and drill the center hole. Then create a "sandwich" placing the...
