Can the Bridgeport go against a wall, in the corner? I would put your workbench against a wall.

    Shop equipment options

I have been looking at the Fanuc Robodrill or the Haas Minimill. Would love a Haas TM1 but don't think I have enough room :( Out of interest do all VMC require compressed air for the toolchangers? Regards Steven

    Hello from Somerset, UK.

Where are you getting your ball screws? I find good quality ones expensive. Steve

    Small Weekend Projects

I don't understand why you are making things so complicated. I have one lathe tool height setter that I use for all of my lathes. I can check it from either cross slide bed or lathe bed where the lathe bed is flat. I just used a piece of pipe painted it black popped a centre in the lathe and...

I like to do bench grinders

Really nice. Very quiet. Nice use for spare motors. You should have a go at making a small surface grinder next :)

starting 100% completely from scratch! what would be the best first few moves?

I only just managed to work out how to post photos myself. Use the insert file button, not the image one. Surface grinding would be nice :)

starting 100% completely from scratch! what would be the best first few moves?

My first attempt at adding a photo. Hopefully shows you what I am talking about; in this case its attached to the cross slide of my Lorch 100mm Toolmakers lathe but I have similar attachment for a Myford. Good luck.

starting 100% completely from scratch! what would be the best first few moves?

Yes there are a few books on the Unimat SL, all of which will be useful for OP. But my reason for recommending a Unimat type lathe was based more on the usefulness of such a small machine. With something small and modular in form like a Unimat he can use this as his main lathe (drill press...

starting 100% completely from scratch! what would be the best first few moves?

If you are going to buy tools and equipment for clock size working I would recommend a Unimat SL if you can get your hands on one with accessories to convert to pillar drill or something similar. I only recommend the SL because it was the machine I was told to get when I set out in watch and...

    Safety Turning

Hi Norm, If I remember right it's quite hard to grind a chip breaker yourself on a standard grinder as generally the wheels are rounded off. When I was an apprentice the older boys used to grind them by hand on a surface grinding wheel if this helps.. Steve

    South Bend heavy 10 vs....

No problem, I was only joking. I did some research on the Southbend lathes you talk about. They look well made, to be honest if I had one of those I wouldn't be wanting to swap it out in a hurry if it was in good condition. Steve

    South Bend heavy 10 vs....

Which terrible people are you talking about and what is an old heavy 10?? Google the Chinese lathes you are interested in and read about them. I think there are quite a large number of posts from people whom do upgrades on these machines to improve on there shortcomings. To be honest I...

How to calculate for single to three phase

Hi all, Thanks for replies. I am UK based, so mains voltage is single phase, approx. 240v. I shall do some research on VFD's, I don't know whether it's more economical to convert to DV or use the 3 phase motor I have and buy a VFD... need to do some research on the options. Ta Steven

How to calculate for single to three phase

Hi all, I have a BCA machine currently with a single phase motor on it but I would like more speed control and I have a spare three phase motor which originally came with the machine. I was wondering can I buy an off the shelf device that changes single phase to three phase and gives me speed...

    Tapping Question

Make yourself a small tapping guide to ensure you keep the tap straight..... Also, you need to realise a tap is cutting steel from the hole so you need to clear the flutes (spaces between the cutting surfaces of the tap), this may require you to remove the tap completely from the hole and then...

    First sand casting

I guess a large part of this is having a good pattern to cast. I for one would be interested in seeing some photos of your furnace. I did read something recently in Practical Classics (UK), where a guy was making aluminium casts for car parts. I shall re-read this article. Out of interest...
