Start on a long term project

Looking good there, Ron! Always nice to see somebody else's progress. As to your question on distances between axles. On mine the distances between Crankpin centres are up to 0.5mm different left to right. Don't know if this will stop it running... I'm making the rods to fit, so will find out...

    Rivets

G'day Ron, I got all my rivets and BA nuts and Bolts from E & J Winter in Newcastle, Australia. I'm sure they would ship them out to you. http://www.ejwinter.com.au/ I've been busy machining the steel tyres and cast iron wheel for mine. One or two would be alright, but having to do the same...

Start on a long term project

It's all looking quite familiar, Ron! I riveted my buffer beams. I'd drilled all of the holes in both the angles and the beams using the DRO in the mill, so the holes lines up (for once ;D). You still need about ten hands to do the riveting though... even using clamps. From memory, it took me...

Start on a long term project

Glad somebody else is mad enough to work on one of these ;D I'll be following your build with great interest, Ron. I'm working on a Super Simplex. I've got the frames bolted together and I'm working on axles and axleboxes at the moment. Keep those pics coming! Gordon

    Brians Radial Engine

Looking good, Brian! That's the way I would have milled the connecting rod. One day I'll invest in some collets and collet block... Like most others here, I enjoy following your progress. At least one of us is achieving something in the workshop :) Gordon

    Ridley's Half Beam

That's beautiful work, Tel! Plans are from Australian Model Engineering Magazine, Nov - Dec 08 to Jul - Aug 09 Issues (141 -145). See http://www.ameng.com.au/ for more details. Was considering building one myself, but I must concentrate on the big picture (Super Simplex) and stop getting...

    My own Engine

Good one, Paolo :) I've been watching with great interest. Having had the joys ( >:() of building and pressure testing a simple pot boiler 12 years ago, I can appreciate how frustrating it must have been for you. Keep up the good work! Gordon

    A small steam engine

G'day Rich, Nice work so far! Very informative :) Just on your last note though: The plans for my first engine (an oscillator) called for a blind bore of 5/16". From memory we had a bu%%#r of a time getting it 5/16" all the way through. Ended up grinding down the tapered section of the hand...

    Silver solder WIRE

G'day All, Thanks for all the information. I was also wondering where to purchase the wire in Australia. Just put in an order with cupalloys. Seems they ship to Aus. Thanks once again! Gordon

size of steam and exhaust ports

I think we are on the same Train, Kermit :) Thanks for your help. I think I'll just do it the old fashioned way - Start small, at about 2mm, and test run from there. I can always drill the passages out a bit, but it is a lot harded to make them smaller again ;D3 Thanks

size of steam and exhaust ports

Interesting stuff :) I've just been applying steamer's formula to the beam engine I'm currently building. It is a scaled-up version of Bill Lindsay's Beam Engine. A couple of questions though: The engine I'm building is a Single-acting engine. Does the formula take this into account, or does...

What's Your First Project of the New Year?

I'm working on a modified version (Scaled up by approx 50%) of Bill's Rotary Beam engine. Also need to make a Tailstock Tap & Die holder. Unfortunately work is going to get in the way :(

    A new shop being born!

Good work, Kermit! Please continue keeping us updated :) I'm currently going through the same process as yourself, having recently completed a 6m x 6m garage / workshop. Just an hour ago I completed the first coat of Polyurethane Paving paint on the concrete floor... I'm feeling a bit giddy now...
