    Shop smells

It's easy, you just need to purchase something like my 1963 Colchester Chippie, with a bit of an oil leak. Shop will soon smell luverly. :D A few leaky oil seals and you don't even have to run it.

    Stuart 10V First Timer

I too have a 10V, but mine is still in it's box, so I will be very interested to follow your progress. This is my first engine project. I have my lathe just about set-up (1963 Colchester Chipmaster) and am looking to get a mill/drill in the next few months, time permitting. Stuart

Newbie Question - Finish on CI

Quick update, with a very positive result. I ground my first HSS tool from a piece of 1/4 tool stock. Nice generous radius. I took a generous cut with a low spindle speed appropriate for 80FPM for CI. Result was a lovely finish. I am well pleased :) Stuart

Newbie Question - Finish on CI

Thanks for the tips, I had assumed that the skin had already been removed as it did already have a rough turned finish. I defintely got a better finish on the outer diameter of the plate, so I must have been running too slow at the start. I will give it another go with a radius on the tool.

Newbie Question - Finish on CI

I bought a part finished Cast Iron chuck backplate which I am planning to use as a face plate. I mounted it up and took a very fine (both in depth and feed) skimming cut. I used a new HSS tool with a sharp point. What resulted was what appeared to be be a fine finish. In reality though it was...

    Show Us Your Lathe

G2817.  It is missing the original splash guard, but the guys who I bought it from are making me a sheet steel one FOC. I also need to find a faceplate.

    Another new shop started...

Kevin, It is a 1963 Colchester Chipmaster. The Brochure says 1260 pounds. I did think exactly the same when I was steadying it as it was being positioned. S.

    Another new shop started...

I was very lucky. There is a small engineering shop in my village, who were looking to get rid of the lathe. The price included them shifting it the 3/4 mile to my place and dropping it in the correct location. I have also been given free access to their offcut bin, who should be a great source...

    Another new shop started...

After a couple of weeks of clearing out my garage, it is no longer a garage, it is a shop... The addition of my first lathe has made the transition. Stuart

    Show Us Your Lathe

Here is my new toy... My first lathe, a 1963 Chipmaster. Acquired from a local engineering shop, 5 minutes down the road. It has been in storage for the last couple of years. It was used by the late owner of the shop for Model Engineering. The paintwork is a bit untidy, but mechanically it is in...

    What is hit and miss?

Hi David, Thanks for the welcome. Finding that video brought back some great memories for me. I never was brave enough to try kick starting the Bolinder myself.. On the model engine front, I managed to pursuade SWMBO to buy me a set of Stuart 10V castings. Now I just have to clear out the garage...

    What is hit and miss?

Hi I am a Newbie here, and this is my first post. I couldn't resist reponding to this post after lurking for some time. Another marine engine based on the hit and miss principle was the Bolinder from Sweden. Back in the early 1980's I helped out on restoration of a Narrowboat fitted with one of...
