silly, but real, plan requests for pump...operated by cats

Perhaps, instead of a pump could you make a valve that is activated by the weight of a cat standing next to the bowl to drink. Then you could have a gravity fed source or the pressurized container Noitoen suggested. In a practical sense I tend to go with Paulsv, but this would be a whimsical...

Larry S, I'm usng a a dial caliper (Sterret), and it's off by varying amounts - a few thousandths.

I.C., steam, air poll, please participate!!

    1) I like the easy to machine alloys of aluminum (I think the 4000 series - I just recognize them when I make my own castings) becasue they machine nicely, look good and don't scratch like the other aluminum alloys. 1% leaded steel is nice to work with for things like pistons and cylinder...

    reamer question

I was turning the work with a hand crank I made - so, very slowly, because I didn't know you could use hand-reamers under power. I have tried several times but I have not used any more lubricant than I use for tapping. Goldstar31 - I don't quite understand, are you saying that from your...

    reamer question

I will try these things. I have indeed been using hand reamers in the lathe for this and they are basically new. Whether I need to solve a basic problem or I need to get the hang of something here I expect it to finally be pretty useful. Hopefully, my head will soon stop hurting from beating it...

Why not piston rings every time?

Thank-you all for the information - it would have probably taken me a lot of failed experiments and I still might not have understood why. Thanks again!

Why not piston rings every time?

Before I start work on another engine I have a general question. Some engine plans require a piston with close tolerances in a cylinder, maybe even lapping. Other plans describe a less close piston with piston rings. Why couldn't I use piston rings for every engine (except low power Stirling)?

    reamer question

I didn't expect such quick responses! They sound like they are based on a lot of experience too. Should I be pulling the reamer out periodically in order to clear chips? Thanks again!

    reamer question

I have a Gingery lathe I built many years ago and I have been able to do pretty accurate work including boring. In order to make things a little easier I have been trying to (for the first time) use a reamer to finsh bored holes. I believe that I am doing everything the way the textbooks...

    gingery home made lathe

Camnefdt, I might add that I found the casting process fun and pretty easy for making the Gingery lathe. If I did it again, I would make the bed with a foam casting becasue it would be a bit easier. I have made foam castings for some things (e.g. for the cylinder and disk of a oscillating...

    gingery home made lathe

cameneft, I built one about 20 years ago and since then made some improvements mostly to deal with its tendency to chatter. I can get pretty good accuracy and I can fix anything that goes wrong. It requires scraping to build (even if you have a friend with a mill). Find someone, or a video to...
