v8 wont run for longer than 10 seconds

My spark plug gaps are around 0.5mm Possibly the coil, see picture, no idea what its out of. Could possibly try a chain saw coil?

v8 wont run for longer than 10 seconds

Thanks for the link, very informative. I got hold of a small carb from a 130cc water blaster. I fitted it but im still having similar problems, I just cant get it to rev without coughing and spluttering, so im starting to wonder if its a spark issue. What sort of gap should the plugs have?

Thought id show you good chaps my recent purchase. Along with a 147cc v8 that I have got running, I bought a nearly complete commer engine from a deceased estate. Its around 25kg in weight. I can imagine this will be a difficult engine to get running.

Here is another one as I go up and down in the rev range

v8 wont run for longer than 10 seconds

I can run it now without it stopping, ive given the needle more taper so it now runs with the choke closed. But ive only got a very limited rev range, if i open the butterfly anymore than half, its coughs and splutters. It idles quite nice and low.

v8 wont run for longer than 10 seconds

I have managed to get it running for longer and smoother now, I bypassed the float chamber as mentioned by the other member, I still have to have full choke on to keep it running though. Still wont run very well wide open, im wondering if the carb is not sucking the fuel very well, that would...

v8 wont run for longer than 10 seconds

The current needle is about 20mm long and only has about 0.25mm taper on it, a lot less than I was expecting, I could give it a bit more taper.

Thats bronze colored thing? No thats the air filter. I have a temporary tank a foot up to allow a bit of pressure to the float chamber, its not very big but given the height I am getting enough flow.

v8 wont run for longer than 10 seconds

I cant adjust the needle height relative to the piston, but I can lower the jet quite a bit (exactly what the choke does) I need to lower the jet nearly as far as possible to get it to run.

That is top of my to do list, just need to find one of suitable size.

v8 wont run for longer than 10 seconds

Thats a point I noticed, when trying to start when cold and the carb fully open, I am getting sparking externally, like the spark plug is shorted out and its jumping from the spark plug connector to the head. Its probably doing this when running. Ill try and insulate the plugs better. I dont...

No air leaks that I can see.

v8 wont run for longer than 10 seconds

Thats the float chamber. Its separate to the carburetor.

v8 wont run for longer than 10 seconds

That box is a hall sensor I believe, there is a magnet on the crank shaft it reads to set the spark timing, you can adjust the timing by rotating that sensor around the crank There is no fuel filter, the air filter is just a simple brass gauze that is currently removed. It does give the...

v8 wont run for longer than 10 seconds

Hi All, I recently purchased a 147cc v8, free lance engine, from a deceased estate. The chap that built its name is Allan Foster, located in New Zealand but from the UK I believe. It has an su carburetor (built by Allan) I can start it on full choke and half throttle, I cant get it to run on...
