    MINI BUDDY .021ci engine

Hi Ed, nice to hear from you mate. Been out of the shed for a bit and not that motivated. Fired up the original Blue Top HollyBuddy today and made some noise and covered everything with a nice coat of castor oil again 🤣 I’ll get back to it and onto some CAD soon!

Crankshaft for opposed twin 5cc CI aero engine

Thank you all for taking the time to reply. I will sketch up a design on CAD and then get to making some swarf. Hope it will be obvious in the 3D model whether I need to make a 2piece crank case or I can tweak the parameters enough that the can assemble the engine with a single piece machined...

Crankshaft for opposed twin 5cc CI aero engine

Thanks Peter. I'm liking this method too. With the tig i suppose there is no option for anything to move out of alignment as you have a light press fit for the dowel pins to be inserted and the main journal still in place at this point. Question: i assume a spot weld at e.g 50a at each side...

Crankshaft for opposed twin 5cc CI aero engine

Thanks for taking the time to post this Dieter. Very comprehensive explanation. My mind is already wandering to how this would work in practice with the machinery I have in my workshop. While grinding as you describe is of course the 'proper' way to do it, with hardened crank pins e.g from...

lovely story. I bet it sounded great too! -P

Crankshaft for opposed twin 5cc CI aero engine

Hi, thanks for the above. the compression ratio is typically around 20:1 on these engines and the ones I have made rev to about 14,000 RPM. This is a stressed part for sure. I hadn't thought of a V-twin but this would actually be the simplest type of twin to make.

Crankshaft for opposed twin 5cc CI aero engine

Hi Dieter that looks like exactly what I'm trying to do. Nice work! Could you expand a tiny bit on what you mean by ground mandrel and maybe the pinning process? looking like an excuse to get a toolpost grinder too :-) Thanks, Patrick

Crankshaft for opposed twin 5cc CI aero engine

I will model something up on cad at the weekend. I’m thinking the same as a Nalon Viper (x 2). I think the dimensions are on the model engine news site. Oddly enough there is an opposed twin in the MotorBoys book (Fig tree pocket) but I really don’t like the screws in the bottom end. Commercial...

Crankshaft for opposed twin 5cc CI aero engine

Hi Niels! Yes very much so. :) I did an inline twin which was was basically two singles popped together. A v twin or boxer requiring an assembled crankshaft is still something very much on my bucket list. Thanks Patrick

Gordon Nano 0.1cc build by OMK

Hey Oli, nice to hear from you. Looking forward to make some swarf. If my result is anywhere as nice as your pair of beautiful engines I will be very happy indeed! I'm busily modelling things up on CAD at the moment. One thing not clear from the plans is the radial positioning of the ports in...

Gordon Nano 0.1cc build by OMK

Hey Olli, I'm venturing back into my workshop after a few months off. I want to build a pair of these. I sourced the plans from ME Nov 1992 and am starting to play around in CAD. Quick one for you. Were there any 'gotchas' in the plans? I found a thread that said there is an error on the...

    Holly Buddy Twin plans

After completing Ed’s excellent Holly Buddy Diesel engine, I really wanted to build a twin. After looking around for a long time I soon realised there wasn’t that much out there in terms of plans or build logs. I came across the Twin from Fig Tree Pocket in the Motor Boys plan book and a Sparey...

    Holly Buddy Inline Twin

Hi all, I finally had a quiet moment to get those plans finished! Bank holiday weekends are great for stuff like that. I have attached them below and also posted to OuterZone (hopefully they will put them up). Again, major thanks to @Ed Holly for this build. This is my first time doing any...

Crankshaft for opposed twin 5cc CI aero engine

Thanks Pete. Did you have any warping issues with the TIG weld?

Thanks . This might be worth a try. Just trying to get my head around the machining sequence!!!

Hello everyone, I need some help!

Hi mate thats really cool. Warning, its easy to get addicted to making engines!! I strongly recommend looking at Elmer Verburgs engines. Something like a Wobbler #25 (my first engine is a great way to start). The 'wobbler' aspect means the valve construction is trivial. If you are trying to get...

Crankshaft for opposed twin 5cc CI aero engine

Hi people way more knowledgeable than I. I have made several single and one inline twin aero CI engines but would really like to have a go at an opposed twin or simultaneous firing V-twin. I could use some advice (PICTURES!!) on making the crankshaft. My dilemma is this: I can easily make the...

Thanks so much Lohring. Much appreciated. Sat here in front of the fire with a cold drink ready to do some reading! --Patrick
