It sounds to me like the circuit breaker is doing its job of protecting the system, something is causing the breaker to trip. Your technician should be able to sort it out quickly with a volt meter. I hope the repair turns out to be quick and easy.

Perhaps another option would be to drill and ream through and then fasten an endcap.

Does that motor have a centrifugal switch to disengage the starting coils?

Chuck, I really like those big-headed gib adjustment screws. I wonder if they'll need some kind of lock to keep them from vibrating out of position. Cool idea to shim the apron to fix the pinion clearance. Does that not affect the half-nut allignment or pinion engagement?
