    Lapping compound

I am trying to get together the materials to build a stirling engine. I have stainless steel for the power cylinder and graphite for the piston. Any ideas for lapping compound? I don't know much about it. Remember I live in Canada.

    Collet systems for lathes

I have a C6 lathe which has an MT4 spindle bore. I also have an X3 mill that has an R8 spindle. I often wish I had a collet system for my lathe, mostly because I want to be able to hold parts without marking them. Is there such a thing as an adapter that would alow me to use R8 collets in my...

    Yet another finger engine

I started to build a finger engine similar to Bogs. This is what my large standards look like so far: I got a bunch of bearings at a local hobbie shop and a pirated copy of Bogs CAD software. The numbers shown are the best measurements I could take with the tools shown. There are 2 sizes...

    Threading dial question

I have done some threading - not much. I have not yet used the threading dial. I always left the half nuts engaged. I want to try using the threading dial but something is bothering me. I know that when I engage the half nuts if the half nuts are half way between two threads on the lead screw...

Why so many socket head cap screws?

Seems like 90% of the machining projects i look at use socket head cap screws. They are also used on most lathes that I see, and on tool holders etc. On my lathe the carage lock screws are socket head cap screws and they are always filling up with swarff making it hard to get a hex wrench in...

    Reading unread posts

There is a link on the home page that reads "Show unread posts since last visit". I use this all the time. Sometimes I don't get a chance to read all the new posts. Is there a way that I can get a list of all unread posts - not just the ones since my last visit?

    How do reamers work

I have never used reamer. I was looking at this reamer http://grizzly.com/products/Chucking-Reamer-HSS-1-/G9457 and I became confused. It looks like the cutting edges are dead straight. So once the first part of the tool goes into the hole the diameter of the hole at the start is now cut to...

    Finger engine questions

I have read this thread: http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/index.php?topic=862.0 many, many times. I think this will be my first engine build. Having never built anything like this before I hope that it will be a real learning experience and a lot of fun for me. I have been wondering...

How do metals stand up over time.

Looking at some of the nice finishes on the engines here gets me wondering how they will look after long periods of time. - The aluminum and brass seems to polish up like a mirror but how long will that last ?
