    O.B.Bolton I.C.12 1.5cc compression ignition engine build

O B Bolton does not ring a bell with me, but your engine looks a lot like the engine well known to engine builders as the "Battiwallah" after the pen-name of the designer when it was published in the Model Engineer in 1948/9. The idea was that it was a home-build as an experience of die casting...

    Printer Calibration

Late to this discussion. However I recently bought an Ender 3 Pro and calibration of all 3 axes and the extruder itself is very easy. You can print an XYZ cube, and then when cool, measure each dimension being sure to avoid elephants foot at the base. It is then a simple matter for each axis to...

A new attempt at making piston rings

Me too. I have made many rings sticking very closely to the Trimble method with no problems at all. I thought that it had already become the standard way of making rings. I use a 1/16" wide parting tool ground at a slight angle to part close to the right, and I break the rings using a...

    Giles "Matador".

Many thanks. It would be better if they sold a digital version rather than just hard copy.

    Giles "Matador".

Does anyone have a set of drawings for the Derek Giles "Matador" 40 sized 4-stroke engine that was published yonks ago in one of the uk magazines.

Ultrasonic cleaning to remove diamond particles

I just set 5 minutes on the timer and that seems good enough. Yonks ago with a different cleaner I left a piston in the bath running overnight and it destroyed the mirror finish on the piston. I have no idea why!

Ultrasonic cleaning to remove diamond particles

I just use hot soapy water in my tank for exactly the job you want to do, but before that I scrub the job with acetone. Prior to buying a us tank I just did several acetone scrubs and I never had problems with diamond retention on my model engines from 0.125cc up to 10cc displacement.

Have you seen the video by Joe Pie... on squaring blocks on the mill. I found it helpful and I always do it this way. Ken

    Better Gibs for mini lathe

The problem with the gibs on my mini lathe is that the edges were sharp and the edges needed to be removed, but more significantly the gibs were slightly bent. Now corrected the mini lathe still has the original gibs.

Mills MK1 Series 1 Scaled down to 0.56cc

I don't think milling the piston step after having achieved a good piston fit is a good idea at all. Easy to damage the piston when holding it. How to successfully de-burr the machined edges? How to ensure the piston doesn't distort ? etc.. But it all looks very nice so far.

    Any one building small engine

Your calculation is incorrect. Compression ratio is not just stroke divided by head clearance. It is calculated from the amount of stroke after the exhaust port is closed. And do not forget that on such a small engine, the volume within the body of a 1/4" glow plug will be significant and must...

    Any one building small engine

Just checking your design. The stroke is 0.3 and the head clearance is 0.05". So even if you wrongly use the full stoke for compression, this gives a comp ratio of 6 to 1 which is very low. But bearing in mind that the exhaust will be open for a bit less than half the stroke, your effective comp...

    Any one building small engine

The blind bore of your cylinder is not necessary, just use a separate head screwed in place like on a Cox but threaded for a plug. This way you do not have to lap a tapered blind bore. Have you built a sensible sized engine, say 1 cc to 2.5cc ? If not I guess you have a long path ahead of you...

Mills MK1 Series 1 Scaled down to 0.56cc

The drawings for the little Clan are in my book "Motor Boys International, members only plans" which is a free download at rclibrary.co.uk and also is available on Adrians Model Engines web site. There are other plans in my book that may be of interest. Ken

Mills MK1 Series 1 Scaled down to 0.56cc

If anyone is interested in building small engines, it really depends upon what you call small. I only build diesels and spark ignition engines, and my ignition engines are never small. My first really small diesel built back in 1988 was an own design 0.15cc diesel. Picture attached. Then at one...
