    my homemade foundry

Looks neat well done , i just want to post pic of my rusty old ingot maker. Ingots are better long and narrow so that they can be melted progressively. So many people cast big ingots which are difficult to melt again. This ingot maker is welded up from scrap angle iron.

Fixing an old lathe with spindle "droop"

Hi TSutrina and MRA the reason why I hold on to this machine is that its a big lump of cast iron and I have two large chucks , if I were to get a similar machine I suspect it would be floor mounted and weigh a ton. Sorry it does not have any Morse tapers. I am not sure where to mount a boring...

Fixing an old lathe with spindle "droop"

Fine thick layer of Babbitt on that old steam shop bearing. Mine would be about that thickness in places if I go down that route. "Ye olde lathe"once had a capstan slide which I used as a Z axis in my Gingery Lathe/Mill impersonation. I've made lots of bits for the venerable old lump of cast...

Fixing an old lathe with spindle "droop"

Thanks everybody for coming to my aid. I think I always try to do jobs like this with the minimum of hassle and cost. Firstly why am I bothering its an old lathe and I could probably buy something better. I just like the fact its a table model with big chucks. If I went for the equivalent it...

Fixing an old lathe with spindle "droop"

Both tjwal and mfrick I thank you and note what you say. I shall have to test any alloy for bearing capabilites. I know that a lot of what people cast is a zinc aluminum alloy not pure aluminum. Have tried melting pure aluminum and its a pain to machine it sticks to lathe tools etc. I have to...

Variable speed control for a small lathe

Hi The problems of providing a wide speed ratio with VFD have all ready been out lined earlier in this thread. I am sticking with my triac controlled washing machine motor 500 to 12000 RPM since I also get a free drum pulley off the donor washing machine for 10 to 1 reduction. Regards Keith

Fixing an old lathe with spindle "droop"

Hi mfrick Thanks fer the info. An operation like this is always going to be daunting. I have just ordered some tubing to make a boring bar will have m12 on the inside to lock the cutter in place. i looked at the Gingery method of boring out bearings. I will not be entirely without machines when...

Fixing an old lathe with spindle "droop"

Hi Gunner The bearing in the pic is the top half. The bottom one is worn as you would expect from the weight of the chuck so I would be lowering the spindle if I recut the existing bearings. In the past I have damaged the bottom bearing trying to get it out (to change them round and get round...

Fixing an old lathe with spindle "droop"

Thanks all ,I have enclosed a better view of the split bearing they sit in a square housing which is only 45mm wide and the shaft is 33mm so there is no room for a roller bearing. I think the best bet would be to cast some more bearings like the originals and line bore them in place. Dave...

Fixing an old lathe with spindle "droop"

Hi Machinists I have had an old lathe and put up with it for so long. Its cast iron and has cast iron bearings which are so worn. Looked at molding some more bearings from aluminium with some tin mixed in but this seems like a lot of messing about. When u haven't got a lathe u cannot do any...

Variable speed control for a small lathe

Hi Almarghi I only have small machines which are lashed together with bits I have accumulated. I would not have a lathe or a Gingery imitation mill if it was not for the versitility of motors. The type of controller I have/make feeds back speed info so the speed is constant at setting unless its...

Variable speed control for a small lathe

Hi there The motors I mentioned are universal brushed they are used on front loading washers. I can get loads I know a guy that scraps washers. They have a flat belt pulley and are designed to turn a big pulley which turns the drum. For machines its best to use the drum gear and cast...

Variable speed control for a small lathe

I think VFD,s have various difficulties they require expensive 3 phase motors. These motors must be designed for VFD this is because the inductance of the windings is important. As frequency and revs go up current reduces so torque reduces. You can off course have low inductance windings but...

Variable speed control for a small lathe

Hi I am in the UK and the washing machines we have contain very good 1 hp motors. I have these motors on both of my machines and a closed loop controller from calenterprises which gives a full torque speed range of 500-12000 rpm. This is translated to lower speed by using the big pulley off the...
