    Limits of breathpower ?

Are there upper and lower engines sizes for breathpower (2psi ?) to turn over an engine ? ie as the model engines get bigger more mass and therefore more inertia to overcome ? and as the engines get smaller relatively higher frictional forces to overcome both in the mechanical parts and in...

Plans for pump to test boiler ?

Thanks for the response Tornitore, I found a plan a few posts further down on that same thread. All the parts were laid out on it . Yes am happy to use lung power to turn over my first two engines, I wanted to learn how to silver solder and thought that making a boiler would be a good way to...

Plans for pump to test boiler ?

I tracked down a design for a test pump by firebird to this thread https://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/threads/a-small-boiler.1820/page-7#post-22763 post # 133 on that page shows a general arrangement and a few posts further on, post #136, the detailed plan has been removed. I think its...

    Elmer's nr 15 - fancy

Hello, Well done - looks snazzy ! If you want an easy moving valve that is very different from the wobbler you have just made have a look at the HMEM EZ engine. That was my 2nd one and am looking for number 3. Bill

some basic direction regarding boiler making

Hello, I am in the same boat as you, made a couple of very simple engines and now making a tiny boiler. Myfordboy has a series of videos on youtube about making a boiler that I found interesting ..... the second one gives details re silver soldering. Stan Bray's book Making Simple Steam...

HMEM EZ Engine - second engine - what sort of rpm should I get ?

Thanks for the comments. With respect to PSI and breathpower ; Internet searches yield various estimates that human lung capability is approx 2psi above ambient air pressure, must admit I found that a bit confusing and currently in my head I just think of human lung power as being approx 2 psi...

HMEM EZ Engine - second engine - what sort of rpm should I get ?

Thanks for the replies, Yes, I can run it on breath power, nowhere near as fast as the tyre inflator though. So will have another go and see if I can do better. Maybe I can tweak the sliding fit of the piston and the valve and try breath test again on this one. Any guidelines for what size...

HMEM EZ Engine - second engine - what sort of rpm should I get ?

Hello, Finished my second engine - HMEM EZ engine - many thanks to those who made and posted the plans. I enjoyed seeing how the piston slide valve worked My RPM measuring device got a bit confused and gave erratic readings so I made a circle of black paper with a white stripe on it, taped it...

    Twin Wankel down under

Looks like one of the original Australian Sherline lathes in one of your pictures - Brass Ways ? Do you use it much ? I have just aquired one myself and learning how to use it. Bill

estimating sizes and copying a build from a picture or video

Chucketn, My apologies, as my post states it was a suggestion, that I saw somewhere else after a bit of googling, rather than a definitive "This One Is IT" I do not know which one it is supposed to be, havent looked at them all yet, try fcheslops suggestion above. Bill

estimating sizes and copying a build from a picture or video

Deeferfog, I know nothing about it, youtube suggested it to me automatically. Somebody suggested somewhere that its similar to one of the Muncaster engines but upside down, plans available here http://www.plans-for-everything.com/hen_steam_engine_plans.html JasonB, I agree with you, a large...

estimating sizes and copying a build from a picture or video

Yes, not a stranger to 3d CAD, used a few different programs for many years at work, earthmoving, digging big holes, not tiny little gizmos but I can adapt. Retired 8 years ago and not had any need to use any CAD programs since.

estimating sizes and copying a build from a picture or video

I like this one Should I be able to estimate sizes and calculate portholes and pivot point for myself and then build something similar ? Any must read websites or books to help me acquire those skills - only have 1 wobbler build to my credit. Bill

    First Engine - Wobbler

Ummm ............ yes its some sort of ferrous material - out of scrap bucket - wouldnt know any more about it than that - Oh ..... I think I get the point of the question - would aluminium be considered too light for a flywheel ? Odd thing - cannot start the engine today ............ yet it...

    First Engine - Wobbler

Hello, I have lurked for a long time. Finally made my first engine - a wobbler from Steves Workshop - link to short video below - probably not the quality of work expected for this forum but I got impatient and decided to see if all of my accumulated mistakes and miscellaneous scrappy bits...

    Grinding wheel choices?

Goldstar, I am interested in your honing process - what grits of diamond paste do you use ? I did a scraping course in Melbourne a few years ago and the process you describe above was how they sharpened the carbide scraper blades. I have had people tell me that after honing they can shave a...

    Grinding wheel choices?

Hello, I have recently started using a diamond disk, they seem to work very well with HSS and are discussed in various forums on the internet, you can get the tiny little ones for use on Dremel type tools of the big 6" ones for use on bench grinders Fairly cheap compared to AlOx wheels. Try...

    finish when turning

Hey Kiwi2 thanks for the details on the wood finish. And now a question please, relevant to the OP's initial question A concept I've bumped into a few times and never really understood is relationship between tip radius, feed rate and depth of cut for final finish. I've sometimes seen things...
