    Help identify this tap?

Hi Guys, All the automatic nut threading taps that I've seen and used are curved, looking like a letter "J". The tapped nut slides down the shaft round the "J" bit and falls off the end into a bin. The tapping machine looks very similar to a lathe.

    Cutting oils

Hi Guys, I've tried all sorts of things to use for cutting and threading compounds ! WD40, Kerosene, Diesel and various commercial products for both alloys and steel. Some years ago the Locktite and Rocol reps gave me several tins and bottles of stuff to try ! Temaxol was the best all round...

    Nasty collets

Hi Pete, I 100% agree with you ! The Rego-fix collets that I only have a couple of, are obviously very much better made and finished than the cheap ones. Your right about the hardness, a Stanley knife blade will easily mark the metal of the collet. However since all the straggs of swarf are...

    Nasty collets

Your not the only one to discover that these collets have not been cleaned up. Basically they have not been tumbled as they should have. I used a Stanley knife blade to clean mine and found that they were much much better afterwards.

    T63 toolpost question

Hi Jonathon, I got rid of my Dixon toolpost a long time ago and made a Norman Patent one. I also made a rear toolpost version to hold a parting blade. I made both tool holders the same bore size so that I can swap between them at will. Its far superior and more rigid. Its also quite easy to...

    Taper setting device

Hi Jonathon, The tailstock set over method would be better if you are going to make a long taper (longer than 75 mm). As far a putting a point on the end is concerned a 60 degree one would help if you are going to do work between centres. Don't forget to put a drawbar thread in the end if you...

    Taper setting device

Hi Jonathan, Here are pictures of the center that I made for my rotary table. Its MT2 and made from brass. I drilled and threaded an M6 hole through it so that I could not only use it to locate a work plate but to be able to pull it out when finished with. Its taken a little while to find...

    Taper setting device

Jonathan, You could always use your gauge blocks to set the lathe tool angle, Or anything that is perfectly parallel or a square. Set against the template ( a Morse taper ) ideally held between centers, to set the compound at the correct angle.

Yes it certainly rattles your teeth when running. It amazes me that it can be stopped almost instantaneously and then reversed just as quickly. Which for its original purpose as a rolling mill engine would be necessary. Thanks for the picture !

Hi Peter, Nobeard, Guys, Kelham Island Museum is worth a look ! Free entry. The river Don engine in steam is a sight to behold. They usually run it twice a day.

    Mini Lathe belt slipping

Hi Guys, If the lathe in question is the one in the picture, then the belt tensioner is the bolt sticking out on the extreme middle left of the small picture.

Bob Shores Model Engine Ignition Book

Hi Guys, As far as I know, Bob made all of his works "Open Source". Not for any commercial use ! Though I do know that there are people selling his drawings.

Bob Shores Model Engine Ignition Book

Hi GreenTwin, My take on "Kettering" style ignition systems is Bob Shores is right ! If you consider the ringing from the ignition coil, then that is an alternating waveform, even though the initial voltage pulse into the coil is a DC voltage.

    Bore Gauge

Hi Joe, I agree, ball races are manufactured to extremely close tolerances ! Since the manufacturer states the bore diameter and the tolerance, there is no reason not to take advantage of that. In fact I've used ball races a number of times for precision measurements. Also very useful when...

    Bore Gauge

Hi Ninefinger, Thanks for your constructive post. You can see in the pictures that I used a 13 mm ring gauge for the initial testing. An initial taper angle of 14 degrees was used, but as you pointed out, it took a lot of turns with a micrometer head. I've considered re-designing it using an M6...

    Homemade measuring tool inner diameter

Hi Gordon, Guys, This thread is getting confusing, because there is another thread where bore measuring is also being discussed. https://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/threads/bore-gauge.35663/page-3 If I can refer you to that thread. Thanks.

    Bore Gauge

Hi Guys, I've not been able to find the original drawing so I've re-drawn it. On the left looking into the measurement end, the grey circles represent the balls. I've used 6 mm diameter for them as an example. The minimum measurement diameter is 13 mm. On the right the small blue circles...
