Set up the required measurement with the slip gauges with an extra piece at each end protruding. The distance between the extras is the setting for the bore gauge.

It may have already been discussed but budget digital calipers and scales do not in fact turn off when the on/off key is pressed. This can be verified by moving the device while "powered off" and checking the reading when repowered. only the display blanks, the processor remains live. Battery...
