    Material storage

I have been struggling with material storage for ever. The problem is that my inventory keeps expanding. I just can't build enough projects from the "scrap bin" to deplete my supply. Fortunately, I share the wealth when possible with club members. I use 3 methods for storing materials. The...

    Clamp dog

Three dogs I quickly fabricated. Not the most elegant, but they all do the job. With a little effort you can do the same or better. And faster then it takes to find and purchase. ;)

Grinding and polishing cast large(ish) aluminium air intake?

Kim, Some years ago I had a plating company polish an aluminium intake manifold for me. They offer and I accepted their cheaper price that didn't detail the nooks and crannys. I was very pleased with the result. The difficult to reach areas are a mat finish and blend reasonably well with the...

WHY DOES SITE USE ALL MY CPU?

Pete, Thanks for posting this issue. I was having the same problem "....all my CPU", and I have 2 GB of RAM! I ran "HijackThis" and it reported 108 routines running in the background. Like you, this Revelation only confused me more. Then I followed black85vette suggestion and minimized the...

    Mrs Maryak's Mansion

Bob, Nice work! I live in Los Angeles, California, where tagging is quite popular. One solutions I have found effective is REPAINT. you have more paint than they have. Nothing worst than having your tag disappear faster than you can replenish your spray cans.

What is your answer to this question?

For years I was a very shy person and as a consequence missed opportunities to learn from others. I went unnoticed or noticed but ignored. I sat in the back of the classroom and participated very little in classroom discussions. Then I noticed that participation and class grades seem to directly...

    Lapping Aluminum?

Greg, I lapped a brass cylinder using a mandrel made from plastic pipe. It worked very well for me and it may work well in your case. However I was only lapping tenths. I have been told, like Gail suggests. your lap should be of a material softer than the part to be lapped so plastic or hard...

    George Thomas Rotary Table

Dave, I built this Rotary Table about 5 years ago. The table is rather small but I like using it for small items. I fits nicely in the vice on my mill and it is light weight. I reviewed the write up in "Model Engineers Workshop Manual" by Geo, H. Thomas and purchased plans from Guy Lautard...

    A Knurl Pitch Chart

KC, knurls come in a range of pitches. http://www.mcmaster.com/#knurls/=9d26cs My classification of Fine, Medium and Course was arbitrary based on the dies in my collection, and like you, my knurls were not labeled. To determine the pitch I counted the serrations on the die and divided that...

How do you guys clean your lathe?

For removing swarf from the bed tray I sweep the swarf with a paint brush on to a dry wall taping knife. I prefer the taping knife to a dust pan because it is easier to handle in the tight space between my lathe bed and bed pan. Periodically I wipe the machine down with a solvent soaked rag.

    Summer activities followup (pictures)

George, I can't agree with your more "the engines deserved more than the cardboard boxes ....." And your cases are every bit as elegant as the engines you are encasing. simply beautiful!

    Model engine fuel tank

Stan, Excellent observation (plug vs cap), and idea (a sealing cross vent hole). I collected several helpful techniques from your post. http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/index.php?topic=8797.msg94616#msg94616 I have Funnels in a couple of sizes as part of my travel kit. But it certainly...

    Model engine fuel tank

I just finished a fuel tank and wanted to share it with you. The tank is 1-1/2' in diameter and will be used to supply fuel to a Hit and Miss engine, the Farmboy designed by Jerry Howell. The brass fuel tank was fabricated from a salvaged piece of tubing from a sink drain. The end caps were...

    Marking out material

Brian, I am glad you started this thread. I am always looking for other methods to keep me from scrapping parts. Ninety five percent of the time I dykim my parts and scribe the location of holes trim lines and radii on the part. I do this even though I will be locating these features with...

How do you pack your models for shows?

Jeff, Earlier this year I posted a similar question. http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/index.php?topic=8365.msg88986#msg88986 Here is a picture of my travel case I have seen several similar solutions. In one example, the modeler had custom wood box/cases for each model. The boxes...

    Small Coles hit n miss

I have often wondered if there was a preferred direction of rotation and then, why was that direction preferred? Jim mentions a clockwise direction viewed from the left side and my gut, unqualified opinion, is that this direction favors the drive direction of appliances connected rearward of...

    Hats off to the MDMC!

Outstanding!! I am sure that your members will beaming at the NAMES show, and rightfully so. I am jazzed by this type of activity within our hobby. My club just recently completed a group project, the Farmboy Hit and Miss by Jerry Howell. http://www.schsm.org/html/group_project.html. Our...

    A Knurl Pitch Chart

Recently at my club’s meeting, a question was raised about Knurl Pitches and getting knurl patterns to track repeatedly through part revolutions. It was conceded that for knurling soft materials such as 6061 Aluminum, one could “mash” the knurl die into the part until the die tracked. But what...
