Radiused groove in cylinder port face

R.G.Y., that would work, although it might use up more material. I was also thinking of holding the port face against a turning rod that had emery cloth wrapped around it ...

    Melting Copper. Please Help

Kolten, I share your interest in pouring copper. I have it on my list to pour some axe heads that duplicate the one found with Oetzi, the Bronze Age Ice Man. I know it can be done with charcoal, as that is what the ancients used. Here is a link to a site on Viking bronze, that should give you...

Building a stand for the lathe

Well, I ended up ordering the Micromark 7X16, so the stand won't have to bear much weight. Still, I understand that mass in the stand helps minimize vibration. Will post when I design and build it. I'll shoot for a spindle height of 42-43 inches from the floor.

    Oregon boiler code

Having read the state boiler code topic, I just had to e-mail one of Oregon's boiler inspectors. I will let you know the reply. Here is the text of my e-mail: Hi Susan: I chose you among the listed Boiler inspection staff because you were the only one with a 541 phone prefix, and I am in the...

Harry, I don't have the lathe in hand yet, but am waiting for the Micromark 7X16 to ship.

Radiused groove in cylinder port face

Thanks guys. I'm trying to visualize this operation on a minilathe. Will see if there is something on Youtube. It seems to be a very common step in making simple steam engines.

Radiused groove in cylinder port face

Dumb question of the day: How do you cut the radiused groove in the cylinder port face that accommodates the cylinder, the two being silver-soldered together in constructing a very simple steam engine? Can it be done on a lathe or do you have to have the milling attachment?

    Bought the Micromark

Thanks for the advice, Tin. I went over the LMS kits carefully last night and concluded that I would be ahead a bit to just order what I think I'll need to start: live center, drill chuck, four-jaw chuck, quick change tool post, a basic selection of cutters, centering drills, etc. I have a good...

    Bought the Micromark

Thanks fellas. Looks like I will have a bit of homework before I learn to use it. The Sieg brushless high-torque motor and the 16-inch bed sold me on it.

    Bought the Micromark

I just ordered the 7 X 16 from MicroMark. Within my budget, I think I'll be getting a good machine, and still have some cash for tooling. Anyone else running this lathe? If so, advice would be most appreciated. Plan to order tooling kit (s) from the Little Machine Shop.

    "Deep hole" drilling

Lots of great replies here fellas, and thank you. I asked the question to help guide my choice of which lathe to buy. Still thinking hard about the Grizzly 10 X 22. Here is what I would like to be able to make, in addition to small steam engine parts: http://www.handgonne.com/gonne_4a.html The...

    "Deep hole" drilling

Trying to envision this. If I had a 12-inch piece of , say, 1.25" diameter round 12L14 bar stock and wanted to drill a half-inch hole 8 inches deep, how big would the lathe need to be and would it require any special tooling? Or could this be accomplished by going slow, using plenty of cutting...

Where do you buy your copper, brass and bronze?

Hobby shop prices are a bit on the painful side. Is this where most buy their materials for builds?

Building a stand for the lathe

Ernie, that's a very robust looking stand you built. I was thinking that using 4 x 4s for legs, 2 X 6 bracing, bolted, and braced 3/4 or 1-inch ply for the top would be plenty sturdy. Can I ask you the floor to surface height of your stand?
