You sure seem to be kitting up well Rod! Half the fun of this hobby so far is buying new tools! Thanks for the link, this DRO seems like a good one: http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Free-shipping-2PCS-Linear-scales-1um-0-500mm-800mm-1000mm-2axis-Digital-display-DRO/903293_427101594.html...

Hi Bob. Welcome! I'm a newbie in Brisbane too. Not far from you in Rochedale. What sort of projects are you planning / interested in? Dave.

Beautiful. How do you achieve that finish and will you use a lacquer or coating to preserve it? Thanks for posting so many photos!

    Rod's Aussie Shed

Sounds good. Yep I had to modify my drip tray to sit flat on the bench. Basically I just took to it with the angle grinder to cut down the lip that sits bellow the tray bed.

    Rod's Aussie Shed

Hi Ian, I wish mate! No it's not granite, it's a laminated chipboard kitchen bench top from IKEA. I found them to be the cheapest supplier of 50mm tops. I believe a 2.6m length was $80. This material should stay dimensionally stable if it remains dry - to ensure this I coated all seams and the...

    Rod's Aussie Shed

Hey Rod, good to see things are coming together and no damage to the lathe. You've given me lots of ideas for my little shed and lathe! I too live in Brissy and own the same lathe, I've just got it all adjusted and running sweet. I built a lathe bench and installed some shelves and draws...

    Going Postal

I'm new to this game, what stores in the UK and China do Aussies find good to buy from? A google search doesn't show much.

Which drill bits should an Aussie buy?

Thanks Rod, Yep the price for the dormers on eBay seems good. But I see that this particular set is made in brazil. So the Aussie made suttons might be the best way for me to go after all. Cheers!

    A V8 Maybe

That pic shows its really coming together! I'm struggling to find a satisfactory way to mount the milling attachment. My problem is that if I simply mount it where the toolpost goes my cross slide does not have enough travel to allow milling from one side of the attachment to the other. So I...

Which drill bits should an Aussie buy?

I've read Dormor drills are very good. What do the wise people here think? Here is a similar set for a similar price but with free postage. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dormer-A190-No-202-HSS-Drill-Set-in-Metal-Case-Metric-/350688945444

    New Aussie with Lathe :-)

A big THANKYOU to metalmad for gifting his milling attachment to me. Mate, it was great to see your workshop and projects! Its given me a lot of ideas. I'm keen to start some casting now too! Now I just need to find a way to mount the milling attachment and I'll be laughing. Thanks again, Dave.

    New Aussie with Lathe :-)

Hi Ian, don't worry about derailing the thread, I too love "beverage hobbies". I brew my own beer from grain and do full mashes. I also have experimented with oak. I find oak cubes provide a more multi-dimensional effect than chips. They are basically 1cm cubes of diced barrel. They are charred...
