Both, and Stirling too I guess: https://www.youtube.com/@a41capt I’m currently finishing a non-compression engine that’s been on again/off again due to other things getting in the way! There’s lots of us engine guys here in AZ! John W

For Sale 1/4 Scale Rider Ericsson Hot Air Engine Casting Kit

I know it’s an old post, but is this still available? Thanks, John W

    PISTON AND CYLINDER SIZE. (O-Rings)

Agreed! The knowledge gained from making your own cast iron rings is extraordinary. My early examples left a lot to be desired, but with practice added to gained knowledge, they’ve become an integral and looked forward to part of the experience. I highly recommend giving it a try! John W

For Sale Atom V incomplete free for shipping

I assume you’re referring to the intake transfer ports in the cylinder? I figured that’s what the two external covers concealed. As for the exhaust port timing, it’d be interesting to see how that aligns with the exhaust manifold mounts on the front of the engine. I’m still willing to take a...

For Sale Atom V incomplete free for shipping

I’d love to have a go at it. Looks to be a rotary valve 2-stroke, and perhaps water cooled as you said. I couldn’t find much about the Atom V, just an old auction site, loads of Atom III pics which were considerably smaller. Are the plans you’ve got enough to complete a build, or will it be up...

For Sale Atom V incomplete free for shipping

That’s an interesting engine, but I’m having trouble finding any info on it. Can you shed any further light on that model? Looks like a 2 stroke, but I can’t tell Mitch from the picture. Thanks in advance! John W

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Brian, I did the same thing when putting my Pioneer cylinder together, and you’re absolutely right, it made for a really neat assembly! I elected to cut my fins all the way down to the cylinder liner to maximize the cooling fin surface area, and it looks great. I’m considering an opposed twin...

Flat Plane vs Cross Plane Crankshafts, and Firing Order Considerations

I agree wholeheartedly, as my BMW R1200 GSA boxer has got to have the smoothest, most vibration free ride of all the (100 or so) bikes I’ve owned since 1967. Back in the 60s, while racing American flat track and TT, the shop BSA had more torque and power than the Triumphs that I was assigned to...

    My latest 2 engine builds

Very nice looking engines. I love building engines from bar stock and/or 3d printing various parts (or the whole engine!) because I don’t have the dough to spend on castings. Those two engines of yours look like some very nice work, congratulations! John W

Scraps and Solder Become an Engine

I just saw this thread, and it looks like a great little engine to build for some kids I know that’re after me to make them something. I’m going to attempt to render it and export to some STL files and try a 3d print in PETG. I’ll set the parts up to be bolted together so those kids can assemble...

    Mini Mill Fine Feed

Really nice job! I too became tired of not having a method of continuous feed, especially when boring so I did a little digging and found a 3d printed handle for my mini mill and started a thread about it...

    Experimental Flash Steam and others

The Harley Davidson KR engine (45 cubic inch racing engine from 1959 to 1969) was of a side valve configuration with only a 6:1 compression ratio. However, it was very competitive until the overhead valved British motorcycles hit the racing scene, causing the AMA to limit the total displacement...

Design of a Simple Model Steam engine.

It’s always so cool to see a model engine doing some work, no matter how small. I think your ideas regarding power increases have merit, but chances are that your heat system for the boiler might be lacking. I know there’s not much room in your boat, but if you could build some form of...

Boiler for putting around in small dinghy.

I’m watching this one intently! I have an idea for a reciprocating steam powered generator and have no outright knowledge regarding boiler capacity, etc., although I have several 19th century books (somewhere) in my library to dig out. John W

    My shop

HaHaHa, I’m with you! To work and/or move around my workshop/garage you have to walk sideways like a crab. Between all my machinery, presses, benches, 3d printing setups, a couple freezers and gun safes, as well as a BMW motorcycle, if I add one more thing it might over-pressurize and...

What Fillament, wall thickness and Fill Percentage for Patterns

Looks like about 10% infill. Even then, if they switch to a gyroid infill it should add a bit of extra strength without much time increase. No brim shown, so they’re getting good bed adhesion with the filament employed. This cuts down on their post processing time and speeds up delivery of the...

    My first build.

Wonderful build with well executed plumbing! I love the oil cups and detail on the exhaust stack. How well does your condenser work? Are you able to recapture the condensate tank water and pump it back to the feed water tank? Seriously… well done! John W

What Fillament, wall thickness and Fill Percentage for Patterns

I haven’t done any casting with my prints, but if longevity is what you’re looking for, I second the opinion regarding a 0.4mm nozzle. I’m also a big fan of PETG as it’s a bit more impact resistant, resists warpage due to heat, and once dialed in prints very well at 0.16 layer height. As far as...
