    Simple problem yet confused result

Move the dog to the other end? On my sherline lathe, the dog is driven by the faceplate which is on the spindle. Not sure how I could move the dog.

    Simple problem yet confused result

I will not machine that end... I will cut it off. So, I will have to use a little longer piece of stock and throw away the extra.

    Simple problem yet confused result

Thanks abby, I've tried my 4 jaw scroll self centering chuck and 3 jaw scroll self centering chuck and a 4 jaw independent chuck with dial indicator. I got similar results with all 3. My conclusion is not that the deflection was as much a problem as was the fact that you can only depend on the...

    Simple problem yet confused result

Yeah... the pain of turning 3 parts that are junk and spending the better part of my Sunday on it. Mistakes and confused results like that are worth more to learning than reading from a manual. Sure wish I had some machine shop training. Perhaps some day I may try my local community...

    Simple problem yet confused result

Now the reasoning behind the concept of "turning between centers" and using a dog becomes clear to me.

    Simple problem yet confused result

This is what I've learned so far. Please add your commentary and feedback and let me know if you agree with my analysis. Thanks. Lesson#1: It would appear that it is difficult to rechuck a 6" rod so that the end of the rod will be accurately centered as the chucked end is. If you need to...

    Simple problem yet confused result

I am a novice machinist. I am using a sherline lathe to set a diameter to a piece of aluminum round stock. My problem is a simple one, yet I am confounded as to what is happening. I am using the sherline 4 jaw chuck with tommy bars. I put a piece of aluminum rod in the chuck about 1 inch in...

    Chuck precision problems

Ok... I did a test and here are my results. I tightened the chuck in each key hole in succession after opening the chuck several spins, removing the rod...then replacing it and tightening again. keyhole# runout 1 .006 1 .004 1 .013 2...

    Chuck precision problems

I am having a tough time finding a way to get good accuracy for my hollow chisel mortiser. It has a B16 plain bearing chuck... which is showing inconsistency when I chuck the drill bit for the hollow mortise chisel. Sometimes it chucks the bit ok... other times the bit is chuck way off...

Excellent!.... My replacement chuck is also B16

Removal of Chuck on Motor shaft

Good advice. The chuck is stamped with only "1.5-13mm B16" and nothing more. My guess is the taper is JT33.

Removal of Chuck on Motor shaft

Wedges won't work because there is no shoulder on the shaft. I am reasonably sure that the shaft is tapered because I can see a slight taper before the shaft enters the chuck. When I open the jaws fully... I can see there is only a small 3/32" hole at the bottom of the chuck. My current plan...

Removal of Chuck on Motor shaft

My new benchtop mortiser is pretty nice, but comes with a chuck that is pretty lame. It appears to be attached to the shaft by a taper. I believe I have a matching replacement with a much better quality chuck (pic#2). The chuck is a 1/2" chuck, marked 1.5-13mm. The Taper goes from 14.7mm to...

    Bicycle Trailer Rack Mod

This was a relatively simple but neat machining operation to modify an off the shelf bike rack, so that I could attach it to my trailer tongue. Here's a 3 minute video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksukKW-qiDQ
