Southbend 9 - motorised manual feed modification

Pretty simple modification to remove the manual hand wheel and fit a stepper motor. The stepper motor is manually controlled by a pulse generator with speed dial, off/on and forward/reverse. From what ive seen the conventional way of motorising drive is by motorising the applicable leadscrew but...

Can anyone tell me what this tool is ?

Thanks everyone. Yeh there are 4 of them. Nearest thng i could think of was like a hydraulic dozing jig for pulling damaged cars back into shape. Thanks again.

    Very close call

Glad you escaped without serious injury. I recal watching the film The Machinist put the willies up me. The potential for serious accidents is always there and theres no guarantee against human error , best have a few emergency stop switches scattered around just in case.

    South Bend 8K photos

Interesting thread and thanks for posting . My impression is that it seems like there are manafacturing issues traceable to Taiwan but overall Grizzly seem to have responded pretty well in terms of customer support , especially considering its a heavily discounted relatively low budget lathe. 2...

    Blomquist Lathe Clean-Up

Nice lathe thanks for the pic. For what they cost to buy these days you get a lot of lathe for your money. I paid £100 for mine and everything considered am glad it works as well as it does. Everything polishes up ok with a bit of fine paper. The turning speed noticeably drops under load on...

    Blomquist Lathe Clean-Up

Thanks for the feedback DJP. Good to know that i can stop obsessing over the lack of perfect finish. Dont tell anyone but when it comes to parting off i just go through it using a hacksaw and then face off. Ive put up oil protection to catch the most part of the splatter , the new white paint...

    Blomquist Lathe Clean-Up

Bought a Blomquist (southbend clone) lathe on ebay last year. before and after. Its my first big lathe and seems to work tolerably well but i dont get a glassy finish turning 303 stainless more like either a very fine matt finish or a shiny mottled finish. I wonder is thats as good as i can...

    Mini-Mill Spindle-Column Alignment

Rudy well a week down the line and it seems stable. One thing i did notice was that my x axis trammel varied on the lhs depending on if the spindle head was tightened or not indicating the carriage was fitted loose enough for it to move on tightening. I tightened up the carriage adjusters...

    Mini-Mill Spindle-Column Alignment

Very interested to read the link to how you solved the problem of column flex in your mini mill rudy. Seems we both had the same problem ; forward tilt due to top frontside weight on slightly flexible column. You opted to strengthen the column while i opted to counterbalance the topheavy weight...

    Mini-Mill Spindle-Column Alignment

Thanks Rudy. Your method got the spindle head lined up with the column. Trammeling the mill revealed that the column/spindle was not in perpendicular alignment to the table/base. It was discernably tilting forward - presumably a natural consequence of the front heavy spindle head weight on the...

    Mini-Mill Spindle-Column Alignment

Thanks for posting this rudy. Very helpfull. One thing that i would add is to check the adjustment of the column/carriage assy for correct fit - mine had discernable movement that interfered with reliable measurement and adjustment of the spindle. Simple adjustment of the 4 adjusting screws...
