    8X12 Lathe in sad shape

Regular baking soda will work also. I used Arm Hammer baking soda just last week. I did throw about a teaspoon of salt into the gallon mixture just to decrease the electrical resistance of the solution. It derusted the item pretty good in my opinion.

    8X12 Lathe in sad shape

Lathe Nut. I’m in New Orleans. And yep, living down here is a struggle. Seems like the hurricanes are hitting harder every year. Anyway, as far as your rust, Evaporust is great stuff. But it’s expensive. Another very affective and cheap derusting method is the electrolysis. Washing soda and a...

    8X12 Lathe in sad shape

Yep, I remember after Katrina that a storage building I had in which all my tools were in flooded. By the time I got around to going through my tools and equipment, some of it was pretty bad. It was probably a year before I actually had time to go in there and clean and lubricate my stuff. Like...

    Deviding head $311.99

I purchased one of the Chinese dividing heads and kind of agree with Courier Dog. The first thing I had to do is a tear down and deburr . Then the main thing in which vastly improved its behavior was adjusting of the backlash. The gears on my unit are acceptable in my opinion. Not perfect but I...

    Mini diesel engine.

You could easily design a butterfly plate to close off airflow. It would look like a choke plate on a carburetor.

    Mini diesel engine.

Willy B is absolutely right. I’m surly not an expert but my 20 years of turning wrenches taught me to always think about how I was going to kill the runaway diesel. Whenever I would begin to work on a MB, I’d have some sort of ball or pan which I could jam into the intake if the engine began to...

    Parting tool chatter

All types of scenarios and possibilities. Could be just a screw up which was unforeseen. Very possible that it happened just as reported, a wet market. That said, if any government were to intentionally want to harm Capitalism of the major Western Economies... a pandemic appears to be a pretty...

How can I find a good home for my father's steam engine

FWIW.... I don’t know the specifics of the different gauges, but since I see zip-ties holding the wheels to the track... I doubt this is something to have people ride behind. It looks like it could easily fit on/in a display case. Beautiful work there. I’d say it’s a keeper.

    Morse tape in lathe.

Clausing Lathes have a MT 4-1/2 the sleeve is a reducer to reduce from 4-1/2 to MT 3 and I think the spindle mount on many Rockwell Lathes is an L-00 taper just like the Clausing 5900 series lathes. I’m just guessing, but if the Rockwell uses a sleeve, then it probably also reduces to a MT -3

WTB 7 inch metal shaper, Atlas 7B, South bend or others

Better call Fastenal. I used them once and agree that they were reliable and the shipping cost was very reasonable. That said, I recently read on another website that since Covid-19 hit, Fastenal has suspended its shipping of machinery for the public. I haven’t checked, just repeating what I...

What is the best paint for an old machine restoration.

I remember it like it was yesterday. The Auto Body Painter at the Ford dealership dropped down and every one thought he was having a heart attack. He was painting a car using Imron Paint and he was wearing a double cartridge respirator filter, but it obviously wasn’t enough. EMS rushed him to...

    Nickel plating

From what I’ve read....and mind you I’m certainly not an expert, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn. Anyway, the problem with most Chrome Electroplating is hexavalent chromium compounds are toxic. Like real toxic and also very highly regulated now. Electroless Chrome is a totally different...
