University of Maine's BSMET Steam Engine

The Lombard Log Hauler is being handled by the BSMET class above me. Really interesting project for sure. There are a few videos on YouTube of the work they are doing.

In my experience, anecdotal and actual, it certainly does. You reduce flow restrictions and mechanical resistance and the reduced losses will result in a higher operating speed.

    Single cylinder pneumatic "race" engine

Those drawings were done in Solid Edge. I also have all of the solid part files available. :)

Hi Leonard, The no load max revs test I think just happens to be tradition for the college. It was discussed in another thread to use a baker fan and I completely agree. The slowest rev test is also a really good idea. I feel it would reward very well timed engines. What usually happens is...

University of Maine's BSMET Steam Engine

Greetings all, I am a student in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program at the University of Maine. As part of this program, we draw and build a steam engine. The plans are given to us during lecture. We use these plans to familiarize ourselves with CAD (Solid Edge) and it's attached...

    Single cylinder pneumatic "race" engine

Oh I don't think anyone will mind if people use the plans to build their own. That's not a problem at all. :) Just needed to give the "standard disclaimer." I'd love to see people use these plans for their own designs.

    Single cylinder pneumatic "race" engine

I will first say that all of the following documents are property of the University of Maine's Mechanical Engineering Technology Department... now that we've got that out of the way... :) Please note that these drawings SHOULD be complete but there may be errors. I drew them, and I wouldn't be...

Here's a quick animation of the standard steam engine that I will be competing against. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pi-OcbBU6Dw

    Single cylinder pneumatic "race" engine

The class itself is meant as an intro to machining, and the test is steeped in tradition at the school. A baker fan would be best, no doubt about that. As far as a test of engineering goes, I think anything is a valid test of engineering if there are real design constraints and a specific goal...

    Single cylinder pneumatic "race" engine

Hi all, Part of my BSMET program is to build a steam engine from plans we are given. This is to get us used to working with machine tools before we take on larger projects. At the end of the semester, we "race" our engines and see who gets the highest RPM from the standard design. The standard...
