4 jaw chuck selection--Self centering or individual jaw adjustment type

if you look at my (fuzzy) photo you can see that one of the corners aligns between two jaws, it will centre perfectly like that seems counter intuative I know

4 jaw chuck selection--Self centering or individual jaw adjustment type

I also use a 4 jaw scroll as my basic workhorse, better grip, holds round, square and also hex so no need to change chuck

    Stuart No 4 Engine

just catching up, pleased its running, did you change the valve round as you have it in upside down, should look like this. The modern drawings dont show it clearly but the older ones have a cross section and show it clearly. If you would like a private copy PM me. Just finishing mine and first...

    A Brian Rupnow Air Motor

Pleasant design, Is it based on some commercial plans?

    It will not run.....

I agree with Jasonb looks like the eccentrics are set the same(ish) so the engines will try to run in opposite directions, best to set each engine individually at TDC with a 90 degree lag whilst rotating the flywheel the same way that way you can be sure they are both going the same way.

    Sharing our best non-standard practices.

To centre a rotating table with a chuck, first face some scrap in the lathe, blue it then aligning each jaw against the tool scribe a line across the face with the tool, 3 times for a 3 jaw. Move the chuck to the rotating table and find the centre with your normal method (I use a needle)...

    Sharing our best non-standard practices.

To centre a square bar in a 4 jaw dial in a round bar of the same diameter as the across flats of the square then release 2 jaws and replace with the square.

    Tightening a hammer head

simple, hold the shaft, head up and tap the end of the shaft on a hard surface, this tightens it up on the shaft, lock it by driving the wedge in with a hammer and punch.
