The main thing to remember is to concentrate the heat on the denser of the two parts to be joined. The smaller piece will be drawing reflected heat, and only when the larger us up to temperature should the torch play over the smaller piece, and then quickly apply the pre-fluxed solder rod...
Thanks for this Tony. I am a jeweller and have just bought a small lathe with a T bar facility. The post is very helpful and I will be practicing with my gravers.
Presumably you use hand turning techniques in conjunction with traditional engineering methods where greater accuracy is required?

The darts in the photo are hallmarked silver (925) at the Sheffield Assay Office. Presumably they are 18 carat gilded judging by the colour?
