    Making a Chris-Craft flathead

Haha, if it took that many attempts, it really WOULD get left. I'd put an electric motor inside it! Martin

    Making a Chris-Craft flathead

Cogsy, I just don't have the need for or interest in a single. Just like I don't have the slightest interest in a V8, even if I could make one with ease. A twin cam 6 would be nice, but camshafts already frighten me so a twin cam is not on. I just want a realistic model in a suitable boat. I...

    Making a Chris-Craft flathead

Hi Rich, I have a feeling the Panther Pub may be too big for my needs and I have no idea how to make it watercooled, but thanks for the thought. I have those drawings above for a Chris Craft and they would be sufficient to design a nice flathead around. At the moment, I am just assessing the...

    Making a Chris-Craft flathead

I will attempt to draw up the Whippet in overall dimensions and print that ChrisCraft 4 cylinder down to a workable size. I was wondering about using proprietary cylinders and pistons from , say old Merco 61s, as I already have 2 that I bought for a tenner the pair at a dog show! I'd like to...

    Making a Chris-Craft flathead

Oh that's a very useful drawing, bluejets, thanks. In fact I meant to ask, is there a book about building engines generally from which I could take snippets of usefulness? It would save me from searching out old ME articles by ETW, for instance. Cheers, Martin

    Making a Chris-Craft flathead

I'm sure you're right about giving up. I had to with a Westbury Sealion, but only because I got busy, required a smaller more accurate lathe than the Myford I had and ended up with the Taig, because it was cheap. Had it now for over 30 years! Flogged the castings to a bloke in Oxford who dealt...

    Making a Chris-Craft flathead

Bluejets, I appreciate what you're saying about the difficulties of making a small 4 cylinder, although I don't really understand what you mean about the top slide. I hadn't anticipated any problems with the valves, just the camshaft seemed to be the potential stalling point. The reason I want...

    Making a Chris-Craft flathead

That's very helpful. Many thanks. I can probably do something with that as it's quite basic. Sidevalve is easy too. Cheers, Martin

    Making a Chris-Craft flathead

It seems that the Meadows engine in the Whippet hydro was a 4ED, a numerous and very basic OHV 1500. I'm wondering what happened to that website where the guy had fabricated everything from brass due to having no mill. That's something I could do as I also have no mill and only a Taig lathe...

    Making a Chris-Craft flathead

Many thanks for your suggestions, chaps. I'm in eastern England, btw. Bluejets, that's a lovely looking and sounding engine. Will you be making a rocker cover for it? I suppose making a 4 cylinder is sensible for a first job and I could always put it in a model of the Whippet single step hydro...

So, are there any plans for the Hercules? Just a section or a cutaway would help. Martin

    Making a Chris-Craft flathead

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. The Chrysler block looks simpler, so I could probably make it in brass, fabricated. I don't have the equipment for machining large lumps. Nobody makes kits of a straight six, as far as I know. And the Seal wouldn't do as a base for a 4 cylinder as the plugs are...

    Making a Chris-Craft flathead

I would love to make a 1/6th scale model of a Chris Craft boat engine. Flatheads (sidevalves) seem to sound so good and I am a model boat builder anyway, preferring the mahogany hotrods to any other. Has anyone published plans of a flathead 6 cylinder engine in any scale, or even a four that...

Champion No. 2 High speed drill...

That's the one Michael, thanks. 2 for sale on ebay currently, oddly, but mine has a cast alloy pulley guard with a nice etched alloy printed label on the front, fixed with two "drivets", which, to my amazement, punched out, no trouble from behind. I've never seen this addition to a Champion...

Champion No. 2 High speed drill...

Hmmm, I think I'll stick with my Mid Brunswick Green, a.k.a. Lotus. Lighter than BRG and more yellowy. I have a tin of good old HMG enamel that colour and you've just reminded me, but......green for a machine tool? I really don't think it goes. If I could get that greenish grey that Spitfire...
