I don't know if artists supplies graphite can be used. It can be found in 3/4 inch diameter and about 6 inch long and comes in various grades. The hard variaties look suitable for making pistons.
Why is it not usefull while you say it works well? You mantioned making things heavier, is that required to make it usefull? It is a very interesting piece of machinery!
What is your problem with the compound on this lathe? I have a simple SIEG C2 which probably has about the same design. It could have been made better, but that's a problem in manufacturing and not in design. What am I missing?
Silversteel might be too expensive but how about old files? Or other hardened tools. Can't help you with advice about gear cutting. You're way ahead of me.
OK, I found tha Avia mill. Not exactly a table top model but not an elephant either. It seems to be copied quite a lot according to the info on http://www.lathes.co.uk/avia/.
BTW: that webpage mentions: "If you have an FNC-25 the writer would be interested to hear from you". Maybe the writer...
Thanks! That helped me to search the internet for suitable parts. Although I didn't find the type of blades I'm after (single sided bevel, about 20 mm diameter) it did point me to a type of cutter I can use to cut disks out of carbon steel. Now I have to decide to buy this tile cutter or make my...
I have to make a number of rotary cutter blades of about 20 mm diameter. It is to construct a series of rubber cutters for cutting rubber motors for model flying. I can buy these blades for 30$ per pair but that is not my intention. For accurately cutting rubber the cutters must be very sharp...
I never did gear calculations so please enlighten me. The number of teeth is OK in the calculation but how can the diameter be 2x as big instead of 1.4x as big? This gives me an uneasy feeling.
I would like to learn more about "raising the dottle" or other ways of cleaning the joint. Do you mean to clean while the solder is molten? Or is it just a way of saying to clean thoroughly in advance?
OK, I restarted my PC and now it seems to behave normally.
In the first picture you see the modified top slide. The self locking bolts are in a strip of nylon(?) from a wide tie wrap. I drilled 3.5 mm holes and just slightly tapped a M4 thread in it so the screws would engage in the strip. The...
I've taken pictures, but my PC won't behave and I can't get them from my camera. So that has to wait.
You are right that the switch to a brass gib strip was a separate upgrade and not related to the other improvements.
Today I replaced the knuckle buster allen screw on the top slide handle for...
Bill,
I've modified my topslide by drilling two big holes from the top so I can reach the hidden allen screws. Much easier! But this also involves removing part of the gib strip and dovetail. For the rest I added two gib screw holes and made a brass gib strip. The latests mod I made (today) was...
