The Monitor was in a couple of other shots I took. I'm sorry they don't show more detail. John

2023 Black Hills Model Engineering Show - 9/24/23 Update

Here are a few photos I took at the 2023 show. Many thanks to Mike and everyone that organized and set up the show. Looking forward to the 2024 show; the dates are September 28th & 29th. John

    Harvard/Stickney Jr Model

I made a new head gasket from 0.4 mm graphite foil sheet. The engine is back together, and with a little fiddling is running pretty well now. I took it to a show this weekend and ran it for at least 2 hours over a three day period. The new gasket seems to be holding up so far. Here's a...

Got the engine apart, and verified the head gasket is indeed blown.

    Harvard/Stickney Jr Model

Mike, thanks for the information and the kind offer to send a sample. I will keep it in mind as I consider all the options. Ideally, I'd like something a little thicker, e.g. 0.015 inches (0.4 mm) or so. The gasket is relatively small - approximately 2 inches (50 mm) in diameter. I do not...

    Harvard/Stickney Jr Model

Mike, could you kindly provide a little more information. What sort of fiber/fibre are you speaking of? A link to a specific product would be helpful. The gasket currently in the engine (the one that blew out) I made from a standard paper gasket material, commonly available at auto parts...

    Harvard/Stickney Jr Model

I put this aside a few months ago, and it's time to try to fix it. After reading some older posts about gasket material, I think I'm going to try Teflon sheet. I have a question for those who have used this successfully. Should I use any type of sealant with the Teflon, or should I just leave...

    My Briesch Olds

Looking at this a little closer, it appears there are/were at least two different sizes of Olds casting kits. My engine has 1-7/8" bore, 2" stroke, and 8" diameter flywheels. There is a letter "B" cast into the side of the hopper, and the drawings say "Breisch". The MiniSteam engine has a 7/8"...

You might want to contact Ministeam. I believe they sold the casting kits at one time. Their web site says the kits are out of stock, but they may be able to supply the plans. John

Looks good! I like using Hall sensors for model ignition. They are small and less obtrusive than automobile points. I have one on the Fairbanks-Morse in my avatar and one on my Stickney. John

    My Briesch Olds

I'm posting these at the request of another member. I acquired this last fall from another modeler. It is not currently running and needs a little work before it will be ready to try. There are a few projects in the queue ahead of this one, so it will be awhile before I begin working on it. John

I will get some pictures of the Olds for you. At the moment it's stored in the basement. I'll have to bring it upstairs where there is better light for pictures. I will try to do it this weekend. John
