Clausing 5914 lathe for sale, in VA

This is a decent Clausing model 5914 serial # 503556 with a lot of accessories. 12" X 36" by the catalog. 3 phase. The ways look pretty good. It needs a bath and I'm sure some adjusting and tinkering. I have a variety of literature/manuals/catalogs and high quality scans of that same...

    3" diameter steam whistle

Oops, guess this is a long dead thread, anyhow here are some more pictures. Also a couple pictures of the little whistle, I made it some 15 or 16 years ago now.

    3" diameter steam whistle

Unfortunately the original pictures disappeared, I'll try to upload them. some are the original photos when I made it, and a couple from today, it's tarnished some sitting on the shelf. I didn't say much about making it in the first post.. basically just measured the original and made it up...

Bill - 1906 Four Cycle Gas Engine Build

I also have the plans, looks like an interesting yet simple enough engine for starters. Are there any other build threads for this engine on here, I have not found much? Grigg

    Willans Blast Injection engine

Thanks Ian, I'll stay tuned for future updates, glad to hear y'all are pressing on with the engine even if it is slow going. Wish I lived a few thousand miles closer and could come see or even lend a hand. Grigg

1/4 HP Vertical steam engine in "Metalworking" reprint by Lindsay

This is confusing, sorry about that. If it's that difficult just buy the book, it's a really good one with a whole lot more than just a couple engine plans in it. Grigg

    3" diameter steam whistle

The diameter and the length of the bell affect the note(frequency), perhaps it's also or more correctly the inside volume of the bell? There might be some formulas to predict the note but the simple answer is probably make them long and trim the length to suit. As far as the musical side of it...

    3" diameter steam whistle

You can get some sound with just a deep breath. I've used 100 PSI and it works fine but seems to sound better at something less than that.

    3" diameter steam whistle

Thanks, It is quite loud but I doubt you can hear it in all the way down there in NC ;) Next time I get a chance I'll try to make a recording/video. Grigg

    3" diameter steam whistle

Here are a few shots of a whistle I made a few months ago. I found an original (lunkenheimer I'm pretty sure) at a junk store and decided to mostly copy it with a couple changes that I think look better. Before you ask I'm sorry but I don't have any drawings/plans, with the real thing in hand...

Hello from Virginia, new models not to engines..

Thanks for the welcome guys, Steve, If I recall a 16V149 marine is rated around 2,000 HP. They made a 20V149, I don't have specs for one but probably not rated any more than 3,000 at best and I doubt they squeeze 4,000 HP out of them even testing. The 20V149 is the largest "Detroit" until you...

1/4 HP Vertical steam engine in "Metalworking" reprint by Lindsay

Here are a couple pictures of the few parts I made several years ago, back when I was just starting to learn this machine shop stuff. I remember being extremely proud when I finished that little brass cap screw, one of the first things I made in the shop. Grigg
