    Most efficient Steam Engine?

Lots of good info in this post. I still like the idea of this concept. I know that it might be hard to get things to the proper weight and size though. How much HP do you guys think would be needed for such a project? The other thing that I have thought about is a Stirling type engine, but...

    Piston and Cylinder materials?

Cool. Perhaps I will go with an aluminum cylinder and a brass piston. The aluminum is cheaper anyhow. Thanks Greebe

    Most efficient Steam Engine?

Kermit-- Do you have any links on info for flash tube boilers? Safety is obviously a concern. I do not want anything blowing up. :o Richard-- Yes, I would be very interested in that article. That would be awesome if you could scan it for me, I would be very grateful. Any info and plans would...

    Most efficient Steam Engine?

Thanks for the replies. I guess my concept is one that could be portable in the sense that it would be small enough to easily transport via ATV, snowmachine, or a SuperCub(small plane), but have the power to do useful tasks. If I were using a gas engine it would probably be in the 5-hp. range...

    Most efficient Steam Engine?

Just curious as to what the most efficient steam engine design is. I know this depends on the usage of the engine, but overall what would be the most efficient? The reason that I ask is because I am interested in possibly building a mid sized steam engine that could act as a PTO for running...

PM Feb 1973 "Tiny Steam Engine" Anyone?

Dennis-- Very nice looking engine. Is it all aluminum and brass except for the drive shaft? I like the looks of it. I don't know if I understand the rotary valve. The drawing makes it look like it the two slits are not connected. How does the intake and exhaust get to and from the cylinder...

    Piston and Cylinder materials?

I haven't built any steam engines but am planning on putting together one of the Launch style steam engines like in my post here:http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/index.php?topic=8083.0 One of the questions I have is about the piston and cylinder materials. Can they both be brass or...

PM Feb 1973 "Tiny Steam Engine" Anyone?

Thanks for the responses. I figure it is time for me to make one of these engines. Tin-- Thanks for the link to the plans. That is a much better descriptive than the PM article. Ironman-- Your engine looks very nice. I think I will just order the stock that I don't have and build from scratch...

PM Feb 1973 "Tiny Steam Engine" Anyone?

I found a box of Popular Mechanics magazines from the 50's up to the late 70's in the attic of my mother house when she bought it in 1993. As a mechanically inclined 13 year old, I was thrilled with my find. The one issue that I found that really caught my attention was the Feb 1973 issue. This...
