I've never built a model engine, but I dabble in machining small parts in steel, brass & copper (and sometimes plastics like Permaloid). I have ZERO formal training in machining.
I do most of my work on a Rivett model 2b watchmaker's lathe, which is about 130 years old. I have a full set of 80 chuck collets, 5 ring collets, a 3-jaw chuck, and a 4-jaw chuck. I found the lathe at a local flea market for $50, and I quickly got interested in aspects of clock repair not possible without a lathe - like re-pivoting.
So far I've only completed one project in steel, which was a replacement for a badly worn tailstock locking mechanism.
I'm retired, but I spent my life operating small, medium and large offset printing presses for (mostly) commercial printing companies.
