    Steam Engine Cylinder Lubrication

Interim "cheating" only. That valve is a temporary stop-gap until the real thing is ready to go. Probably a month or two. Or three. Doing this allows me to actually run the engine without fiddling with the blow gun on the air compressor. It's a very good valve, actually, and a temptation to...

    Steam Engine Cylinder Lubrication

That's what I was thinking. Assuming that the orientation of the oiler doesn't matter. My intent would be to install it just above the water trap, as shown on the attached photo.

    Steam Engine Cylinder Lubrication

I'd considered squirting oil in the air line, but it would then go through the moisture trap and I didn't know if that might be an issue or not. Great idea about the air tool inline oiler!! I'm off to see what I can find. Thank you very much for your reply.

    Steam Engine Cylinder Lubrication

Question for the folks who are running model steam engines on compressed air. How are you lubricating the cylinder? Is there an easy way? From what I understand, a displacement lubricator works only with actual steam. Thanks!

    Coles Corliss - SUCCESS!

Thanks to everyone who chimed in with their thoughts and suggestions on my recalcitrant Coles Corliss engine. It turns out the steam valve eccentric was out of whack, opening the valves around 45 degrees early. With much trepidation (and no instruction manual), I pulled everything apart, set the...

Coles Corliss Steam - Need Help

I think that there may have been more than one version of the Coles engine. GreenTwin posted a video of a Corliss engine in this thread that is a mirror image of mine. On the engine in his video, these instructions make much more sense.

Coles Corliss Steam - Need Help

This leads me to wonder if there was, indeed, more than one version of the Coles Corliss. The engine in the video you posted is pretty much a mirror image of the one that I have. Mine has the cylinder assembly on the left, and the flywheel on the right. If that's the case, the above diagram...

Coles Corliss Steam - Need Help

I followed your instructions. The steam valve starts admitting air very early, somewhere around 45 degrees before TDC. It can be tweaked a little with the front adjustments, but nothing close to that much. I wonder if the eccentric might be off. Those four page instructions talk a bit about the...

Coles Corliss Steam - Need Help

That video would be useful as a guide, but I don't think it's a Coles (or at least not the Coles that I have). Your instructions (above) seem like they might bear some fruit and I'll give them a try.

Here are the four pages. I'll send some pictures a little later this afternoon. Thank you.

Coles Corliss Steam - Need Help

Thanks for replying to my query, Richard. There's a 4-page addenda with timing instructions, and I believe I have followed it correctly. However, it was written in a very confusing manner that makes it possible I did not. For example, "Schematic Valve Setting Sketch, as viewed from the back...

Coles Corliss Steam - Need Help

There's a 4-page addenda that supposedly does that. I think I followed the directions, but they're extremely confusing. That's why I was hoping someone in this forum might have some experience with this engine and let me know what I might be doing wrong.

    Need help with Coles Corliss

Hi. I posted separately elsewhere, but saw your post. I recently bought the engine that Wayne (above) was trying to get running a couple of years ago. Obviously, he was unsuccessful. I've been fiddling with it, and believe I have the valves set correctly, but it won't run. I cannot see a reason...
