    US State Boiler Code

The definition of "Model Boiler" is now online for Indiana: 680 IAC 2-1-2 Title; scope; applicability; definition (f) The term "regulated boiler or pressure vessel" does not include any of the following: (12) Commercial toy boilers and miniature model boilers constructed as a hobby that...

    Newcommen Engine

A very good book on this subject is "The Coal Viewer" by John Curr. 1797. I see a recent digital reprint which some of them do not have the fold out drawings properly scanned. That is a shame because the drawings are what made me buy the 1970 reprint I have...

    Shay Locomotive

Ken, The drawings I made for this project are all available in back issues of "Steam in the Garden" Here is the link: http://www.steamup.com/ So you know which drawings are in which issue here are the Lima drawing numbers and titles that were in each issue of the series. I included...

    US State Boiler Code

Allen, What is the source of this information? Is that from a Pennsylvania boiler inspector? This might cause some of the model shows to rethink their policy. Cabin Fever has always had a Gauge 1 live steam track in operation and G1 boilers have been mostly ignored by state officials. Dan

    Generator questions..any Tech guy's around.?

Martin, Some of the best places to look for information about DC motors as generators is on wind power sites. I kept an eye on ebay for a while until I found a cheep permanent magnet DC motor which was a tread mill take out. Here is a link to a Baldor motor pdf that might help. It gives the...

    Drilling tiny holes

The smallest drill I have is a #80 which is a tad larger than what you are drilling. I used a 1/16" carbide spot drill and a cheep #80 drill to drill K & S square brass tube which is .014" wall I believe. I had no problem using my micro drill press which is a Servo...

    New Lathe: Feed direction?

I have always wondered why my instructors at school said to face from the inside out when as pointed out it works better to face from the outside in. We are talking about making a cut with power feed and figure 73 in "How to rum a Lathe" by South Bend shows cutting from the inside out. Well...

    New Lathe: Feed direction?

I just checked my SB heavy 10 and if the feed direction is toward the chuck the cross feed will be inside to out. I was thought to cut inside to out and that is what the South Bend manual says. I only rarely cut from the inside out I almost always start the cut outside. I never really noticed...

    Brian builds Atkinson Engine

Brian, I have always enjoyed your posts. Going on about who owns the site strikes me a bit like two fleas arguing over just who owns the dog. I hope to continue watching your builds. Dan

    8" Steel Scotch Boiler

Hi Bob. I am still watching this build. I am thinking about a similar boiler for my Stuart Cygnet. What is a 3 in 1 other than a plasma cutter? I have never been happy with my skill with an OA gas axe. Dan
