Be silent or protest...in Forum !!

I use to post on this website regarding safety hazards. These weren't your sliver in the finger issues these transgressions were true life altering issues could happen. I no longer post my opinion simply because I am wasting my time with the, for the lack of a better term, the hobby crew...

Removing pulley from a motor spindle

Lots if good advise here. I decided to add my experiences to the list. First, I would do a good cleaning up of the shaft and pulley where they meet each other. Second, like everyone has said I would check and remove all grub screws. Pay attention to the fact that sometimes a set screw is...

    Home Foundry

I have watched a lot of videos of casting brass, aluminum and iron on this blog & it makes my skin crawl in some cases. I have not commented in the past but, when I see individuals wearing sport shoes, sandals & lacking even the simplest of protective eye wear it makes my skin crawl. First...

    designing my own gundrill

Go to Drill masters Eldorado in milford CT. Talk to these folks about drilling deep holes, they have a lot of man years in drilling and manufacturing of this type of drill. My suggestion is, buy the drill already made by someone that knows the business. Also, have them sharpen the drills for...

Attention! Rancid with other word hardened and unuseful grease in semi-universal dividing head BS-0, BS-1, universal dividing head BS-2.

I the instrument oil was the oil found in an organ of the sperm whale. That oil was used by the whale to send and receive sound waves. Correct me if I am wrong. This oil was highly sought after and quite expensive due to the disappearing supply. Modern oils have since replaced these lubricants.

    Medium sized monotube boiler

I don't know if this link will work properly. I sometimes have issues with digital systems. Anyway, here is a link to some drawings of the single tube boiler being discussed here. http://kimmelsteam.com/henschel.html

What is the best paint for an old machine restoration.

Thank you Norman. I have wondered about this surface finish ever since I had to clean and repaint my first mill some 58 years ago. I love the old joke crack. Charlie

What is the best paint for an old machine restoration.

Ahhh-yes, This would get hard and could be smoothed to provide a paint ready surface. Do you know if they added lamp black to the mixture and what the purpose of that would be.

What is the best paint for an old machine restoration.

Does anyone know what was used as a plaster on the surface of the castings before painting?

There was a foundry in Bad Axe Michigan by the name of Villiage foundry. They did small runs. Also try Berne Castings in Pigeon, MI.

    Centring in a 4-Jaw Chuck

I agree with Mr. Gordon on the issue of using more than one chuck key. I can speak from personal experience that his take on safety is valid. I was an apprentice when I learned that leaving the key in the chuck was a cardinal sin. If your hand was removed from the key it had better be setting...

    Centring in a 4-Jaw Chuck

Steveastrouk, I have to admit I did not give an adjustable 3-jaw a tumble. I used one once a long time ago and found it to be less universal than the independent 4 jaw we had. I put it back on the shelf where I found it. I personally like the holding capabilities of the 4-jaw. For really...

    Centring in a 4-Jaw Chuck

I agree with Noel Gordon. If you want down and dirty then use a 3 jaw chuck. I personally love my 4 jaw chucks. You can dial in just about anything on them. Self centering chucks are more production based in my opinion.

    Splinters

Instead of using a scalpel I went to the local feed and grain store and purchase some 16gauge non core cutting hypodermic needles used to inject medications. These needles have both a very sharp point and edge on them. They worked extremely well for removing slivers. Because of their design...
