My wife bought me this 'microscope' from K-Mart for a whole $6 which clips over your smartphone camera. Surprisingly it does a very good job for the money. I've included a picture I snapped of the ball in a ball point pen. It's not a very good picture but the live view on the phone screen is far better, crisper, clearer. It has a built in LED light so you can place it hard up against objects as well.
For those times where you need more powerful magnification than a magnifying glass it's an excellent tool. Plus it's really interesting to wander around checking things out in close-up. (I don't recommend looking at your fingernails or the surface of your tongue
