Or how a few dollars spent can cost a few weeks.

First the bargains,

$4.00 1/2 in air coupling and a few mating adapters @ 0.50 ea

Let everything gather dust for a year.

Tap the adapter for 1/2 - 13 and the threaded rod 5/16 - 20
Assemble with some flux and silver solder bits, then heat to fuse everything.

Rummage through inventory for suitable materials and machine an adapter for the female coupling.
Heat shrink a 1/2 inch socket and further secure with set screws
