When I built Jan Ridders flame licker engine I had a very tough
time finding a suitable piece of cast iron bar stock to make the
cylinder. When I did finally find some bar stock it happened to be
about 7" long. Being that hard to come by, I didn't want to waste
a bit of! I decided to take a chance and free hang it in the chuck
just long enough to dust the outboard face flat so I could center
drill it and then engage the live center. I did manage to carefully
true up that outboard face, but decided one more light cut was
needed to be totally positive the face was flat.
When the tool reached center it wasn't perfectly ON center
and the stock took to flight.

It didn't do a lot for maintaining the lathe ways integrity.

Guess who forgot yo change the tool offset a put the drill chuck in a clear demo crankcase at 250 inch per minute. Well it almost fit ;D

Note the chuck key hole filled up with shavings and the twisted off arbor that is very firmly seated in the chuck.

OK, I've done that too.

The next piece I was making needed to be center drilled to run
the live center for stability. When you are that far off center
the results are not pretty...

At least the I didn't throw the stock out of the chuck that time, and the
other end of the center drill is still good!

I must be learning more from you than I realized.... I've got a centre drill just like yours! (Same reason, too.) Oh well, as you mentioned, the other end still works.
