Consider the material.
Aluminum, mild steel, cast iron and brass are all very free cutting materials.
It's usually easy to get a good surface finish in the first two material but
cast iron and brass take some trial and error efforts.

This is the best answer to why that happens that I have ever seen!

Wow! Great video! This explains vividly the "cast iron calamity" I had last night while trying to machine the cylinder for my build of "Chuck's Single."

The dull cutters I tried also added to the problem, as you can imagine! ::)
