About 43 years ago, I took a job in a large new college from memory it was supposed to be four storey's high, However in the planning the designers and client decided to add another storey and the clever thing like involving the fire chief as to this addition somehow escaped everyone.
It was a chapter of disasters from day one, the workers and students all moved in on the first day, one of the workers used the toilet facility, vacated the place another worker went in and flushed the toilet, next thing boiling hot water burst the toilet bowl, obviously a "slight error " on the part of the plumbing contractors!
however back to the fire chiefs inspection, He looked at his drawings , scratched his head, recounted the number of floors, looked again at his drawing, and subsequently read the riot act, The outcome was a total revamp of the entrance hall access to negate any obstruction in the event of a fire or any other emergency situation.
Out went all the lovely wood paneling on the walls & plain fire retard plaster was put in place.
