Just wondering, how does the fuel system on an oil fired boiler work? I want to build a half scale or larger steam traction engine sometime in the near future and I want to use a liquid fuel burner to save me the mess and effort of solid fuels. I was thinking of using waste veggie oil as the fuel.

A oil burner boiler works by using a rotating disk spinning at high speed to atomize the oil or by using air or steam pressure to atomize the oil. heavy oil needs to be pre-warmed, but with light weight oil it does not have to be heated.

And my second question is how does one get the disk to rotate, or if its powered by steam pressure, does one light a fire with conventional fuels (wood or coal) first in order to build up enough pressure to atomize the oil.
