I was helping my dad get some things in order at his shop the other day and remembered seeing a machinist toolbox around that he had bought at an estate sale sometime ago here in town. He was a little reluctant to hand it over but being he don't have a lathe/mill or even know how to run one I was able to talk him out of it!

The box is really cool and old. It was owned by W.A. Starring ImageUploadedByModel Engines1408106894.444228.jpg

Mr Starring worked for IBM in 1938 and 1939 according to this punch card

It also looks like he may have worked for Remington type writers ImageUploadedByModel Engines1408106951.254822.jpg

Math don't change so I imagine this book will still be useful to me

Some that I may need help from y'all on how to use too!

Awesome! I've yet to have such an old tool box come my way but have seen a number of others and honestly it is like an adventure. You look through such boxes and wonder just what all the custom stuff was for. For things like type writers you may never see them again.

Great looking old tool chest. Looks like it's maybe from the 20s or 30s. Any dates on it anywhere?

Looks to me that you've got a very old & collectable Gerstner tool chest. This company is still in business today in Dayton Ohio. The rectangle lock and diamond plates behind the drawer pulls are good indications of its age. Look in the case under the bottom drawer for the Gerstner stamp and the back of the drawers for the production and drawer position number. I love the old leather scale cases and handbook. great find!!!! I've gotta go now, I'm turning green. Gary

Gerstner sells the "leatherette" material and has videos showing how to recover if you are so inclined. If material is in good shape, you might get their "restorer solution" which will clean up the old leatherette.
