This area is for the discussion of different metals.
Where to use them and how to cut them.
Take steel for instance. The common term is cutting, but in fact you don't
actually cut steel. Steel is machined by a tool creating pressure and heat
that plasticizes the material ahead of the tools tip allowing it to separate
from the stock. The more heat you can concentrate in a smaller area the
easier the steel will cut. It's kind of a "heat it up and scrape it off"
process.
Other metals are totally different.
Hopefully this area clear up the questions on them.

I am glad this forum has been set up and really hope that people will use it! For me, this is one of the biggest hurdles of learning machining.

rake/60,
Where can I find more info regardiing the plasticizing of metal at the pressure cut point?
How does 'thru the tool' cooling affect this phenom?

Non seqiutor:

DRILLING

"THE PRODUCTION OF HOLES IN SOLID MATERIAL BY CONVERSION OF THE MATERIAL WITHIN THAT DESIRED CAVITY INTO CONVENTIONAL CHIPS BY YHE RELATIVE ROTATION OF A CUTTING TOOL AND THE WORKPIECE . EITHER THE TOOL OR THE WORK-AND, IN SOME CASES, BOTH- MAY ROTATE.

(olde but goody)

I'm used to working with plasticized metal... Heck... nearly every engine I've ever had to repair had J.B. Weld on it someplace, when it arrrived...(innocent grin) Lots of heating and scraping goes into cutting that nasty stuff loose...LOL

Thanks for the note Sedge, but I was referring to the first message on this thread by rake/60

P.S., I try not to use any plastic metal on my engines

If you type "Metal Cutting Tools Plasticized Zone" into any web search
you will find a lot of articles referring to the cutting zone of a
high speed tool. They will describe if better than I can.
