A friend recently purchased the KX1 CNC mill from Harbor Freight. Today we made the first cuts with it and i am very impressed. This is one fine, small machine. We made some simple cuts in aluminum and bronze. The machine was smooth, no chatter or vibration and left a very smooth finish.
HF seems to have removed the KX1 from their web site, but still has the larger KX3. LMS has it at http://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=3501&category=1241045623
This machine is not simply a converted X1 mill- it appears to be a totally new machine. It has ball screws, limit switches, all very neatly wired and packaged. The only thing I see it lacks is a spindle sensor to read actual RPM. It does have a variable speed motor controlled by the software.
For someone that wants to run a CNC mill, not build one this would be a great buy. Id guess you will be paying about $1k more than if you bought pieces and put it all together, but you can have it out of the box and making chips in less than an hour.
