From my days working with Neon signs..
I'm sure this will apply to metal parts that have been worked with a lot of friction or heat.
I found out the hard way about the adage " Hot glass looks EXACTLY like cold glass".
Bent a nice star shape, set it down on the bench, then proceeded to pick it up by what I thought was the next to last bend- wrong!
No more fingerprints for a couple months.
Consider the history of the part before touching.
Sam.

It sure would help if the sense of touch had a little more range.

It would be nice if touch would tell us "That feels kinda warm", way before the pain-receptors start yelling "HOLY CRAP that's hot". Been there done that, and I can say from experience that once it quits glowing, hot steel looks pretty much like cold steel.

I met a guy who had worked in an iron foundry. So much background heat you could not tell the local heat when touching anything black. So he told me they would spit a fine spray and watch the dots to see how quickly the dots would dry-off. No good for glass though!, Or for anything where you can see the colour!
