Recently, I bought 3 very old cast iron window sash weights on Ebay for a pittance. They arrived and were some of the worst looking castings I've ever seen. Sand and small pebbles still encrusted on the surface. Just wanted to take a chance that the iron was usable. Not much hope. But, surprisingly, the stuff was fine grain with no occlusions (after the outer 1/8 inch) and easy to machine. Just finished this 7/8" dia piston for a home-brewed I.C. engine I'm now building. Some days you just get lucky.
